Compensating College Athletes Often college athletes get hurt and miss classes. Shouldn’t athletes be compensated for all that is endured? Athletes work hard out on that field and usually get hurt for more than forty hours a week for an entire season. This is why college athletes should be paid. Four reasons college athletes should be paid are because some athletes need to support not just their family but themselves as well, colleges make billions on deals to show the sport on TV, college coaches can often make millions, and college athletics is technically a job. Many people who oppose paying college athletes say that it is unfair because athletes most likely already get a scholarship to attend the school. The truth is that some college athletes might receive scholarships but not all athletes do. The NCAA wrote, “Only about two-percent high school athletes are awarded athletes scholarships to compete in college” (“Scholarships”). It would greatly improve the lives of many of the athletes as well as the colleges they are playing for since there will most likely be an increase in productivity. College athletes need to be compensated because they need to support their families and themselves. Colleges profit millions of dollars off college sports but the athletes who are doing the hard work don’t receive the money they deserve. While college athletes aren’t making a single penny, colleges coaches make unfair wages that can reach millions of dollars. College athletes are technically full-time employees and deserve to be treated as such. So the best thing to do would to be to pay these hard working students. Take action and petition for colleges to pay student athletes so that compensation could be a thing the athletes finally receive because it is well known that is what they deserve. They work hard for it so it is time for them to receive
