Today, Civic and constitutional illiteracy is a phenomenon that is plaguing our country in more ways than one. And while the current shift towards preparing students for state administered exams and standardized tests is effective to a extent, it draws a further line between educational prioritization in curriculum. Be that as it may, a much more educated populus on the principles of civics, ways in which to execute ones civic duties, among other things would be much more becoming of a “healthy” democracy should such a test or class in civics be held in the same regard. Civics should in fact be a mandatory class, it is imperative to maintaining the democratic balance in a time where there is wavering faith in our democracy and its current state. Seeing as how its value has been seemingly neglected in recent years, there has been in increase in constitutional dereliction. Civics is the manifestation and quintessence of a productive democracy. The functionality of our form of government lies in the hands of its constituency:” the people”. The most pressing question about its incorporation into curricula is: “Why is a course on the Constitution important?”.
