Cosmetics is a very powerful promising industry. People buy different sorts of product for the sake of beauty which is a result of massive profits for this beauty global business. Hidden in this production is the unfortunate situation that animals are getting inhumanely treated. Over 100 million animals are burned, crippled, poisoned, and abused in US labs every year (dosomething.org).There are rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, rats and mice that are being experimented and tested for the sake of cosmetics. The physical well being of these animals should not be jeopardised for material needs. The U.S should ban animal testing in the Makeup Industry. The European Union has stated that animal testing is unnecessary which is proven by the Food and Drug Administration proved that 92% of all products that reacted positively in animals were harmful or ineffective in humans as we are two completely different species! Albeit, keep in mind that this 92% is a part of the rare drugs that are found to be effective or even safe for animals. In addition, many people may be concerned that we may have to test out new products on humans instead of animals. The thing is that we already do. For the reason that animal testing is so unreliable, someone will have to, some time or another, be the person to test the specific drug.
Is animal testing really worth taking away animal’s valuable lives? No, I think it’s wrong, inhumane, and cruel. Over the past couple of years many companies of these cosmetic products released that they are against animal testing including LUSH Fresh Handmade Cosmetics, The Body Shop, and many others. There are still companies that still do test with animals; over 250 on PETA’s website. A large percent of these are well-known companies such as Johnson & Johnson, Estee Lauder, Procter & Gamble, L’Oreal, and others that may surprise the consumer. The majority of these companies are producing the same products yet using different animal testing results. This causes the number of test subjects to be substantially larger than what is needed. The number of tests being conducted could be reduced if these companies either become anti animal testing or share results with other companies. This idea might seem like a long-shot since sharing information with their competitors seems ridiculous. If you take a step back from looking at each individual company, you’ll see that they are all conducting similar tests with similar products. Experimenting on humans is inhumane and completely immoral, while animals that do not function in the same way humans do should be used in medical research and to test the safety of various products. If animal testing were illegal, how would worldly corporations determine the safety of products? Surely the valuable lives of human beings are not essential to risk, hence the reason that animal experimenting is necessary. From those 26 million animals being tested most are not protected by the federal Animal Welfare Act. The animal welfare act does not include birds, rats and mice bred for research, and it doesn’t include cold-blooded animals. Animals testing should be banned because the animals tested suffer immensely, also animal tested is unethical, and because there are many alternatives.
The testing of animals is rising from pharmaceutical and cosmetic companies because the companies are spending billions of dollars on animals testing in order to make products safer to humans. Test animals are also treated poorly and, because of how they are treated, the animals begin to act differently. The substances cosmetics companies inject into animals are very harmful and torturous to animals, so most animals end up dying or being severely handicapped from then on. It still comes as a surprise to me that with all the technology in today’s society, we are still relying on animals for cosmetic research. Some people think that it is acceptable and even justified to test on mere animals rather than risk hurting people. So, for these kinds of people, animal testing makes perfect sense. However, in my opinion, animals are living creatures and have the right to live out their lives as nature intended rather than simply surviving in cages while being poked and prodded with whatever scientists fancy. I think it is depressing and sort of grotesque that I am using products that have been tested on animals that are even commonly bred as our pets.
