The topic that I chose for my argumentative essay is about the topic of abortion. Abortion has been a controversial topic for a very long time. The dictionary definition of abortion is “A medical procedure used to end a pregnancy and cause the death of the fetus”(Merriam-Webster). Many people believe that this procedure is wrong and immoral. These people, who are categorized as “pro-lifers”, often times forget that by making abortion illegal does not mean that abortion will be stopped. In fact by making abortion illegal you will cause the number of unsafe abortions to go up which can cause a much higher mortality rate in women seeking an abortion. This makes the term “pro-life” somewhat ironic because of the future implications of their decision to make abortion illegal.
The first argument for keeping abortion legal is in the case of rape victims. In 1996 the Medical University of South Carolina conducted a study and found that there was approximately a 5% chance that women who were raped would become pregnant. This meant that about 32,000 women became pregnant because of rape each year in the United States. Of these 32,000 women only 32.2% decided to keep the baby whereas the majority of women decided to undergo abortion (NCBI). Those who do not support abortion believe that the woman that is raped should be forced to keep the child even if she is not financially, emotionally, or mentally up to the task. The child that the new mother is now responsible for may struggle every day with being underprivileged which isn’t a good situation for any child to be in. Despite everything that has been said that supports abortion, abortions should be a last resort. People should not restrict other's rights based on their personal morals. Sometimes an abortion is the best solution and who is anyone else to say that it is not. If abortions are made illegal they could cause more deaths than they actually save. This problem can be prevented either way. Whether you are “pro-choice” or “pro-life” you should be able to agree that schools should implement classes that teach about safe sex rather than shelter their children about the reality of sex and its repercussions. This gives teenagers the knowledge that they need to make an educated decision and reduce the amount of abortions in the future.

The Women’s Rights movement was designed to make sure women were entitled to an opinion and was treated equally in society but how are women treated equally if they can’t have a choice to remove something out of their life that is unwanted? Equality means that everybody is entitled to a right without discrimination no matter what it is. Many women become pregnant and the baby is unwanted. Majority don’t have the money to survive while raising a child and many can’t provide the love needed to raise a child. A lot of these children often grow up in poor environments which decreases their chances of better possibility to have a brighter future socially and economically. The words of an unborn baby are ones that almost no one ever thinks of, or hears. One of this country's most controversial topics is abortion. However, if one sees the constitutional infringement to women by the restriction of abortion; the torment to the unwanted child; and the anguish society has to sustain, then this topic would not be so debatable. Too many people do not see the effect that abortions cause. It is a very dangerous offence that affects the mother, father, the community, and most importantly, the fetus, and that is why abortion should be illegal in Canada. First, abortion is against God’s law in many Holy books such as the Bible and the Quran. Secondly, abortion does not only affect the individual, but the community as a whole, and the rights of those people are infringed on. However, abortion does nothing in the cases of rape, or women’s rights, which is the constant argument people in favour of abortion argue. And lastly, abortion should be seen for what it is, murder.
Abortion should be available and a human right! Abortion is a woman's right that should not be limited by governmental or religious authority. Protecting this right is not only a health concern, but also a human rights need. Therefore, it should be considered illegal. I say it should be legal for these three reasons. Abortion should be available because without it, it is a safety hazard. Also, no abortion means more overpopulation and infanticide. Abortion has been preformed for over thousands of years. It was first started for the fear among the “native” Anglo-Saxon women. They believed that the population would be dominated by the children of the incoming immigrants, who had higher birth rates at the time. In the mid-to-late 1800s, states began legalizing abortion but antiseptics were unfamiliar, hospitals were not common, and doctors did not have the knowledge to understand abortion. As years went on, the scientific method began to take over medical practice, technology and it increased the prevention of infection. Abortion procedures became more effective and much safer. The only problem was the states that were anti-abortion, led women who needed abortions to get them from illegal practitioners or get “back alley” abortions. About 1.2 million women received illegal abortions per year. To get an abortion was a dangerous and deadly procedure which resulted getting debilitated or killed. In 1973, there was an important defining moment in public health history. A Supreme Court case, between Jane Roe and Henry Wade, made it possible for women to get safe and legal abortions from trained medicals practitioners. Roe, a 21-year-old pregnant woman, was representing all women who wanted abortions but could not get them legally or safely. Texas, at the time, was anti-abortion state unless it was to save a woman’s life, which was supported by Wade, a Texas Attorney General. The Supreme Court ruled that Americans have the right to privacy; this includes the right of a woman to decide whether to have children without state interference. In my freshman year of high school, I had taken an ROTC class. My instructor brought up in a discussion on opposing abortion or not. The students in my class disagreed with the right of abortion, while I quietly sat back and listened to their opposing views. They thought of abortion as murder, and considered that there are other alternatives to take other than that route. Later on, I remember my mother and I both agreed to abortion having its reasons to be considerable. That the reality of keeping a child is being able to financially support the baby, house-hold family issues that abide by certain morals by life’s standards, and the mother of the child may still being school, which leads to a stressful environment. Abortion is unlike any other subject debated today; millions of women have aborted a child, and the loss, pain, and emotional need to justify what was done, both on the part of the mother and on the part of her loved ones. Abortion is a gut-wrenching debate that has been going on for centuries, and does not plan to cool off anytime soon. The Supreme Court case in 1973, Roe vs. Wade, placed abortion on the map for the United States. The result of the Roe vs. Wade case legalized abortion to protect women’s health, however the good intentions of the ruling opened the doors for people to take advantage of the case outcome. Approximately 1.06 million abortions took place in the United States in 2011, which goes to show that women maybe abusing the privilege of the rules set in place to protect their health and practicing abortion as a form of contraception. Abortion is not only a dangerous procedure for women to endure, however it is also unethical to abort a child. Abortion is immoral because life begins at conception, people need to live with the consequences and not take the easy way out, and there are other available options.
Through every choice in life, there is a decision that must follow. Abortion is a woman’s individual choice; therefore, must be a legal part in todays society. Individual rights have an outstanding role in the controversial topic, on whether abortion should become legal in the United States . Additionally, the right to have an abortion is if the pregnancy negatively affects the woman's or the baby's health. Without abortions as a choice for the “mother” to resort to while she is going through hardship on deciding whether to keep the baby or not, the endless possibilities could negatively influence the mother to put her and the baby in a dangerous positions.
In the United Methodist Church they have many different social principles, one of which relates to abortion. The social principle on abortion states “In the beginning of life and the ending of life are what God has given boundaries of human existence. Understanding that people have always had some amount of control over when they die and they have the same power to determine when and even whether new little people will be born. The belief in the holiness of unborn human life makes us scared to approve abortion. They recognize the conflicts of life that may justify abortion, and in some cases we support the legal option of abortion under medical procedures by doctors. They also support parents, guardians, and other responsible adult signatures and agree that other abortions can be done on woman who have not yet reached the age of adulthood. They don’t allow the late-term abortion also known as partial birth abortion. The Church society calls the Christians to search and prayerful inquiry into the sorts of conditions that may cause them to consider abortion. We entrust God to provide guidance, wisdom, and judgement to those facing an unintended pregnancy. The church also offers ministries to reduce the unplanned pregnancies. They commit to the church to continue to provide nurturing ministries to those who kill their pregnancy, or those who are in the midst of a crisis pregnancy, and those who give birth (umc-gbcs.org).
Every women deserves the individual right to choose whether or not to have an abortion. A female’s reasons may be unclear to someone else however it is her personal choice. In the mid-to-late 1800s states began passing laws that made abortion illegal. The ban of abortions only leads to an increase of back-alley abortions. “Criminalization of abortion did not reduce the numbers of women who sought abortions. In the years before Roe v. Wade, the estimates of illegal abortions ranged as high as 1.2 million per year. Although accurate records could not be kept, it is known that between the 1880s and 1973, many thousands of women were harmed as a result of illegal abortion.”
For years it has been a controversy that an abortion should not be legal. Many people feel aborting an unwanted child, or killing an unwanted child should be against the law. A woman's body is her own to do with what ever she wants. With this being said, on the topic of abortions, I agree with it. Furthermore in countries such as Dominican Republic, Colombia, and Egypt abortion is illegal. Therefore it does not include one who has been raped to receive an abortion. Raped victims should be able to undergo abortions. Women should not have to explain or justify to anyone their reason why they want an abortion. “There are only two ways of thinking about abortion: either a woman has a right to decide not to be pregnant anymore, or other people think they have a right to make her decision for her (Carmon, Irin).” It is very difficult for a mother to have a child as a rape victim. That day when that cruel man took her innocence will continuously play out and the child will contribute to a memory of this horrific time. Abortion has been accepted by the United States of America ever since the monumental Roe vs. Wade case in the early 1970’s, but is still a very controversial issue. Many people are for and against abortions. Some people say that the child inside its mother’s womb deserves the opportunity to live, while others believe that a mother has the right to choose whether or not her fetus can live or die. Other advocates for abortion claim that abortion helps keep the threat of overpopulation down. They also say that in many extreme cases, it is in the best interest of the mother and the child that the fetus be aborted. The topic of abortion has been extremely controversial for years. It has raised the questions if it should be legal or illegal and if it is right or wrong? But the idea of abortion cannot simply be broken down into yes or no, right or wrong and so forth, as life itself cannot be broken down into that. Every individual will have their own opinion on the matter, as their lives, culture, and religion have shaped their view. While the debate about abortion has created divisions between people in society, it has two major groups, those who are Pro-Life and Pro-Choice. In this paper, I will examine both groups in depth and their strong positions on abortion.
