Abortion is a touchy subject for many, with opinions ranging from each extreme side of the debate. The problem with some of these opinions on the subject is that many of them are uninformed in some way or the other. Many of those who oppose abortion ignore the fact that abortion is generally only legal up to about 25 weeks depending on which state is considered (New York Times, 2013), and after that it is only legal in situations regarding the health of the mother or fetus. The problem arises when those uninformed individuals form the opinion that an abortion under any circumstance is evil and unacceptable. The United States has the highest cost of contraceptives, along with a high cost when visiting a physician, with clinics typically having a lower cost (Bancroft & Reinisch, 1990, p. 252). Regardless of the lower cost, many cannot afford contraceptives unless they are completely free, and cannot afford a doctor’s visit or a birth control prescription. This is where the problem lies. The problem is not that people disagree on how abortion should be dealt with, it is that no one is focusing on the root issue on why unplanned pregnancies occur and abortions are acquired. When the root problem of a lack of contraceptive availability is taken into account and dealt with, then there will be a noticeable change in unplanned pregnancies, and ultimately abortions. In order for contraceptives and doctor’s visits to be free, though, is a more difficult endeavor. This would require the government to do something for the people they are governing and develop a universal healthcare system, like those in Sweden, the United Kingdom, or Australia. The United States is ranked last compared to 10 other countries in regard to healthcare.
