Pounding rush of water started to close in on me. The roar of the crowd echoed, as I extended my arms to lengthen my stroke. As I tightly gripped my fingers around my oar, I felt the wind rush around me, and my numb legs started to push harder than I ever thought possible. As I reached the final stretch I remember battling exhaustion by considering two paths: give into the pain, ease up on my leg drive and give up my chance of winning, or push myself even harder, through the pain, past the point I thought possible to reap long term benefit. With my high level mental toughness and tenacity, I chose the second path and later held a medal for all my efforts. I have struggled with eating disorders, depression, coping with my father’s Parkinson’s disease as well as my aunt’s Multiple Sclerosis, parent’s divorce, as well as rape. I also battled with the adverse effects of the drug, Topamax, which I took through second year of university for treatment of chronic migraines. I was greatly affected by nausea, lack of concentration, memory impairment, speech disturbance, confusion, fatigue, and severe weight loss. This drug ultimately impacted my grades and MCAT score. My experiences have made me a strong and confident person. I believe a good doctor must be able to communicate comfortably and effectively with their patients. Unfortunately, I was one of the patients with bad doctor-patient communication. I was not properly informed of the adverse effects of Topamax by my doctor and because of this I suffered serious consequences. Because of my experience I strive to have the qualities of care, compassion and commitment, which I believe make me an ideal candidate to study
