SHORT STORY
David was a 45 year old Scot living in Florence for the past 15 years. He had been there for his summer vacation with his brother and fell in love with the city. He loved it so much that he did not even go back home. His brother died shortly after their trip. David could never fully process and recover from that loss. But if that was not enough, his parents just ignored David and wanted distance from him out of fear to be hurt again. David took it personal and swore to himself that he would never talk to them. A promise that he has held since then. To compensate with the loneliness he plunged into work.
He owned a Café right at the Ponte Vecchio and loved his job. David’s life wasn’t special or exciting, he lived an average life. With his old bicycle he would riders to work every morning, would come home late and go to sleep. He didn’t have anyone except for his beloved lion fish.
David would come home late and then feed his fish. Once he did that he would prepare himself some food or take some from the café. David would eat at his small wooden table with the dull yellow lightbulb above it. The table is next to a miniature window with a view onto the Duomo. Sometimes a cat would pay him a visit for a little snack. Often that was the highlight of the day, next to greeting the florist lady on the way to work. David had a crush on her, ever since he had seen her 10 years ago. He did not dare to speak to her till 4 years ago. Since then he would take the longer way to work, just to say good morning to the florist, who’s name he did not even know.

The thought of death grew near overcame him, he knew he was ready. He asked himself, if he would relive his current life.
He realized that how lonely his life was and that ignoring that wasn't the answer anymore.
Money did not bring him any happiness. There would be no one who would be sad about his death. David was devastated and heartbroken. He felt more lonely than he had ever felt before. What is the sense of life? Should he die? He had some many thoughts, everything that he thought of made him more depressed.
When the east european man came into the shed, to check up on David, he found him up dead.
David had strangled himself and was now hanging from the ceiling.
The death of Marie also altered the way that he thought about his father, in that before he thought that he was not a true sheriff, saying that he “didn’t even look like a proper sheriff” and that he carried “the wrong kind of gun for a sheriff.” However, after Marie passed away, David went on to realise that the “har...

He lived a perfect life and was blessed with perfect parents. Everyday is a new adventure filled with fun. He loved his life and his family. After Abuse: a. David came to believe that there was no god because "No God would leave me like this" Pg.131. He had totally disconnected himself from all the physical pain.
In David journey has is forced to see life in a more truthful and more painful way. He learns many lessons, but none more disturbing than that which follows Frank’s suicide. “You see, I knew - I knew! - I knew! That Uncle Frank’s suicide had solved all of our problems … I felt something for my uncle in death that I hadn’t felt for him in life. It was gratitude, yes, but it was something more. It was very close to love”.
1. In the book, the father tries to help the son in the beginning but then throughout the book he stops trying to help and listens to the mother. If I had been in this same situation, I would have helped get the child away from his mother because nobody should have to live like that. The father was tired of having to watch his son get abused so eventually he just left and didn’t do anything. David thought that his father would help him but he did not.
he suffered through-out his life, ie. the war, the holocaust, his wife's suicide, and his heart disease.
David growing up as a child lived in a house where there was no love shown or caring relationships. He grew up not knowing what good relationships looked like or felt like. David did not think too highly of his dad or aunt and always had

...s is related to his philosophy about doing the right thing and about a being a good person. But it goes beyond this. He spoke often about having true compassion. It isn’t enough to help those in need, but we must truly care about them, to take a good look and see how they got that way. He asked us to examine how we as a society can change the conditions that led them to be there in the first place. Doing this makes us better as people. I have found that it also makes me feel better. Never give up on your dreams. While his life was cut tragically short, he died in pursuit of his dream and in spite of everything he faced, he never gave up on it. He faced obstacles I could never imagine having to face, and still persisted. This reminds me that the small things in my life that often seem insurmountable, are just my excuses for not taking action and are not obstacles.
His altered state of consciousness was a necessity to regain control of is his life, where he got the necessary break from not only work, but also family expectations. Just like the narrator in “The Yellow Wallpaper,” the emotional tendencies are evident throughout the whole story; however, at the end when he dies in this new state, he is finally content with his life and the conflicts are resolved between his priorities and his families.
He has extremely low confidence and belief in himself which is to be expected since he is in unfamiliar territory. His father tries to teach David the ways his grandfather taught him. David’s father is a responsible hunter, he only hunts what is legal and not threatening them, “Are we going to shoot him? […] We don’t have a permit” (Quammen 420). One of the steps to adulthood is learning to be responsible when others are not around, at the age of 11, David learns young but rather unfortunately in the end. Morals and values are an important step to adulthood, like Albert Einstein once said “Try not to become a man of success. Rather become a man of value.” Having a solid set of values and good morals could be the difference in many of David’s future choices, and his father set him on the right path from an early age even though their relationship had several issues. This starts the journey to David’s mental strength shown throughout the story because it brings the right versus wrong to the center of attention. Taking care of family, taking care of the environment and the animals that inhabit the environment and not taking life for granted as he might have before tragedy struck are all part of the journey to adulthood. David’s father was extremely bothered by the moose that had been shot many times by a small caliber hand gun and the scene showed no signs of an attack; a senseless killing of an animal that was left to rot in a pond. David’s father wanted to teach him that if you were going to kill an animal, at least take the meat and use what you can from the
