“Girls in their Summer Dresses” is a short story by Irwin Shaw, describing the rocky relationship between a husband and wife Michael and Frances Loomis. While taking a stroll down fifth avenue Frances can 't help but notice that her husband’s eyes continue to stray to every pretty girl who walks by and when he notices her disdain he simply comes up with random excuses as to why he was staring. to get his mind off the other women Frances plans a day including all of his favorite things such as watching a Giants game, eating a steak dinner, and watching a film. Even when his wife makes the decision to leave him, he watches her walk away thinking “ What a pretty girl, what nice legs” (Shaw). His only thought after finding out that his wife is leaving him was a shallow thought about her looks. The wife Frances was a dynamic character, she believes that she can be enough for her husband and will cure him of his wandering eye but it does just the opposite. A simile is used when Frances and Michael are talking about their morning she mentions “Also, I slept all night, wound around you like a rope"(Shaw). The use of this simile could be used to describe how Frances is holding onto to Michael and their relationship every time she feels him pulling away. The title in itself is a symbol, girls in dresses represent the youth of all the women Michael take notice in. “As with other stories by Irwin Shaw, this one touches on the theme of lost or disappearing youth. Both Michael and Frances feel the approach of middle age and seek to fend it off”(Archer).
