Paul Laurence Dunbar was born as the son of Matilda and Joshua Dunbar on June 27, 1872 in Dayton, Ohio. Both his parents were both Kentucky slaves. Matilda was very interested in learning, so she had attended school. Shortly after Matilda attended school, she became literate with the English language. Paul’s mother had two sons from a previous marriage to another slave who joined the army and was never heard from again. That marriage was before to the Emancipation. Paul was the only son that Matilda and Joshua had together for their brief marriage. Paul’s parents had a divorce when he was still a little boy. Shortly after the divorce, Paul’s Father (Joshua Dunbar) died when he was twelve years old. When Matilda’s two other boys had moved on with their lives and moved out, all of her attention was directed to her boy Paul. Since his mother was literate she taught Paul how to read and showed Paul some literary works.
