Biological warfare. Using infectious diseases, bacteria, viruses, fungi, and biological toxins to kill animal, plants, and even humans as an act of war. But one of the most gruesome biological warfare scientists is Shiro Ishii. From testing germs of warfare on Chinese prisoners of war, to killing hundreds of innocent civilians, Shiro was one of the most harrowing biological warfare scientists in his time. Shiro Ishii was born in Shibayama Village on June 25th, 1892, Sanbu District, Chiba Prefecture, Japan (Chen). He obsessed over building his knowledge on the subject. Ishii’s military medical career began to blossom in 1932 when he was chosen to head up the biological warfare division (Shiro Ishii - Japans Medical Monster). In his time he was supposed to conduct secret experiments on human test subjects in a prison camp. But some of the subjects escaped and spread word on his dastardly deeds, and the Japanese destroyed the camp. “They subsequently moved their medical testing operations to Pingfang, an area outside the city of Harbin, China, and again appointed Ishii as director. Funded by the Japanese government, Ishii had more than 150 buildings constructed across a huge compound covering over 2 square miles and able to house up to 400 prisoners” (Shiro Ishii - Japans Medical Monster). From making human logs by amputating them with out anesthesia, injecting them with deadly diseases and leaving them to die, to human experiments in a secret prisoner camp which later needed to be destroyed by the Japanese army because it became exposed to the public. Thousands of individuals, including women and children, were murdered, stores and other properties were plundered and burned, and countless of women were raped . The Japanese government regarded sex as a way to keep the soldiers obedient and focused so rape was a device used to maintain good, Japanese warriors . Not only did human experimentation occur in German concentration camps, but also in Japanese prison camps. The 731 Unit conducted experiments dealing with plague, cholera, typhoid, frostbite, and gas gangrene . American prisoners of war were treated especially cruel during these human experiments. August 1940, a year from the beginning of World War II and the date of which marks the beginning of Unit 731, a shorten name for Epidemic Prevention and Water Purification Department of the Kwantung army. Unit 731 was part of a Japanese biological and chemical warfare research department with the goal of developing biological and chemical weapons for use by the Japanese Kwantung army. It was given the nickname Asian Auschwitz for its cruel human experimentations that they have conducted toward their prisoners. Unit 731 did not spare anyone from its experiments and had a wide range of subjects, including infants, elderly, pregnant women, and prisoners. Some of the experiments included amputating limbs, vivisection without anesthesia, and injecting diseases into the body. Unit 371 members did cruel experiments, but their actions can be explained through the views of Staub and Doris.

Along with Josef Mengele, other medical doctors joined the Nazi party and performed wicked medical experiments inside and outside concentration camps. Some other medical practitioners include Dr. Karl Brandt, Dr. Herta Oberheuser, Dr. Carl Clauberg, and Dr. Horst Schumann. These doctors not only performed experiments to help Germany’s military, they also experimented ways to advance their belief that the Aryan race is superior to all others. These doctors executed many unreasonable and vile experiments on the innocent victims of the Holocaust.

When you here the words ‘human experimentation‘, you think lab coats, mad scientists, and monsters like Frankenstein. But the reality of it is much more gruesome. People just like you and me were used like guinea pigs. In many cultures, a doctor is thought of as a healer; a person who lives to save others. That was not the case of the physicians that severed for the labor camps in Poland. Human experimentation is sadly a horrific thing of our world’s past and is most commonly related to in the stories of testing taking place in Nazis concentration camps of World War Two. It is evident from Elie’s story that he put all his trust in his doctor and had no fear. There were many doctors in the concentration camps that had no idea their fellow workers were actually intentionally harming the Jews. Hans Munch has been hailed as a “mini-Schindler” at Auschwitz for helping to save Jewish lives (Winik 1). Munch grew up near the French border. As a young medical student, he joined the Nazi party only because it was needed to succeed. He found a way around the system and was able to help many Jews. Instead of injecting toxic serum, Munch and his nurses inject a benign substance that cause a rash, but that did not cause any harm (Winik 9). The nurses then made fake reports. Munch says that if the original serum was injected it would have caused serious harm (Winik 9). At the 50th anniversary celebration of the Auschwitz Liberation, Munch was acquitted of accused war crimes to the Jewish people.
