“Be optimistic! Don't you be a grumpy. When the road gets bumpy, just smile!” Do these words sound familiar? These lyrics are from a song called “Be Optimistic” by Shirley Temple. Not only did she sing happy songs, but she also was a cheerful movie star loved by most. Through many of her television roles, Shirley fought the Great Depression with her innocent, twinkly smile. Amid the fear and hardships of the Great Depression, Shirley Temple was a redeemer to America. She provided hope when there was none. Like Shirley, we need to learn to be optimistic in any situation. It could help one achieve success in all walks of life. To achieve success socially, physically, and mentally, one should make having an optimistic outlook on life a top priority. Being optimistic can help socially. Optimism helps one to be successful in the workplace as well as creating long lasting friendships. Being optimistic at work will impress bosses as well as coworkers. Optimism is often the defining factor of being …show more content…
Though optimism is not studied very often in the workplace, several experiments show that "employees' optimism could have desirable and positive effects on organizations.” (Beheshtifar 70) Being optimistic is vital to enhancing one's resilience, “the capacity to bounce back in the face of adversity.” (Beheshtifar 71) For example, an employee gets yelled at by his boss. A pessimist would sulk about it, while an optimist would accept what he did wrong and move on. Optimism can also enhance risk-taking. Optimism makes one believe that the outcomes of the risks that one takes will be favorable. As optimism can enhance one's health, pessimism does the opposite. "Pessimists tend to have higher blood pressure... than optimists have, and their odds of heart attack and early death are higher too, according to University of Pittsburgh research." ("The
During the 1930’s, the Great Depression was in full swing. The Depression was a period in American History when the economy was horrible. Most people did not have jobs, and if they did their paycheck was barely enough to put food on the table. At that time, many people did not experience happiness very often because of their money situations. However, there was one person who could turn any frown upside down, Shirley Temple. Shirley Temple, the best known child star of her time, ascended to unparalled box-office heights during the worst of the Great Depression, and brought humor and happiness to people in a time of great need.
In the poem “Invictus” by William Ernest optimism can be found in the quote “my head is bloody, But unbowed” (2). This show how no matter what negative thing happens in your life, no matter how bad it is you can always make something positive out of it. Optimism can also be seen in the quote “my unconquerable soul” (1). This shows how confident and positive he is about and is showing he puts the negative emotions to ret and just the positive rise and defeats the negative emotions. He only lets the positive in and lets the negative stay outside so nothing can conquer his soul. He thanking the Gods for his "unconquerable soul...
“To be a great champion you must believe you are the best. If you're not, pretend you are.” - Muhammad Ali. When we pretend we are successful the brain conditions itself to become successful. When we develop the mind-set of a champion we persuade our brains that we are champions. Acting as champions can persuade our brains that we are champions well before we achieved the goal of becoming a champion. When we see ourselves as champions, we ignore the failures in our lives. Ali's quote is one that motivates us to remain optimistic. Some artistic works that express optimism are the movies, The Pursuit of Happyness and Soul Surfer, as well as the songs, Roar by Katy Perry and A Change is Gonna Come by Sam Cooke.
Marilyn Monroe, Norma Jeane Mortenson. A devious soul but a pure heart, a black past, but a bright future; she became one of the most idolized figures in society. Norma was definitely not born with a silver spoon in her mouth, and she never sugar coated her life to the media. She was straight forward which made her heavily known for her quotes such as “I learned to walk as a baby and I haven’t had a lesson since.” (Marilyn Monroe). This was the beginning to her life story as a hero. This may not seem inspiring or heroic to many by the lack of knowledge a person may have on Norma. In the depths of her quotes lay a deep, heartfelt life though. For this quote may seem sensational and comical to the ear, but Marilyn was transferred to many foster homes not really having a parent that would show her the way. What a good role model would do though, and what Norma courageously has shown society, is that when life knocks you down, get up and hit life back twice as hard. Norma Jeane Mortenson, married Jim Dougherty, and started working. Soon she created the character Marilyn Monroe, she dyed her hair blonde, wore short dresses, and she became the momentous and inspirational character that everyone saw through television, newspapers, and photos. She was one of the greatest actors, singers, and models of the nineteen forties and fifties. But like every hero they suffer and create their own demise. Jeane, Marilyn Monroe, is a shakespearean tragic hero, because like every hero she must fall.
Firstly, optimism increases an individual’s motivation in order to accomplish their goals. Additionally, people who encourage themselves to accomplish what they want, tend to be successful in life. Therefore,
But what about the contrary? Even though optimism is commonly thought as superior to pessimism, the capabilities of pessimistic thinking are not to be undervalued.
Firstly, people who show an optimism bias feel more happy and satisfied with their life. These people are also more in control of and engaged in their life’s goal, they will not just think about happy thoughts and wait for life to pass, instead they will be engaged in a meaningful life and do whatever it takes to accomplish their goals. They are also less likely to give up on a difficult situation and will cope with it. These are people who will not wait for the rain to pass but who learn to dance in the rain in order to fulfil their life’s goal. Unrealistic optimism shows an increased well-being and happiness. With this increased well-being, unrealistically optimistic people are also more able to pick themselves up after a major life
There are times in life where it feels as if life just keeps throwing obstacles left and right. It may seem like nothing is going right, but there is a solution to this epidemic. Ultimately, the way people handle these troubles will determine how impactful they are. In order to best handle a situation, being optimistic is always the best solution. While there is always the sad and gloomy option, keeping your spirits up will help you in many ways. Not only will it relieve some stress you would get from worrying about the problem, it will also keep you calm so that you can make the correct decisions you would not normally make if your brain was in a state of panic. But what is being optimistic? Optimism can be defined as being positive, flexible,
Yes, being optimistic is believed to be beneficial in terms of living a long and healthier life, but too much of it can sometimes create problems. Being overly optimistic can be a disadvantage. When it comes to financial decisions, overly optimistic people do not make the decisions that a pessimist would. (Nauer, 2005) Optimists tend to not budget their money well, which can lead to debt. A little optimism can be beneficial at times, but too much can hurt someone economically. (Robinson, 2007) Another disadvantage would be unrealistic optimism. An example of this would be a person thinking nothing bad can happen to them. Unrealistic optimist believe that their future is better than the next person’s. They also tend to believe that they are less prone to contracting diseases. This disadvantage is titled risk perception and risk behavior. (Macfarlane, Yanes, & Imar, 1995) Unrealistic optimism can be compared to the planning fallacy. (Buehrer & Griffin, 2003) This meaning underestimating something or being too confident in decision making and things do not go as planned. While being too optimistic in terms of the planning fallacy, deadlines are still a form of motivation. However, overly optimistic people aren’t as prepared for failure as a pessimist would be. With them focusing only on the positive, there is no way they would be prepared for the negative. In life, a person must be able to cope and adjust with both the negative and the positive, which is a problem for an optimist. (Seligman, 1998) A downfall of optimism can sometimes be unbearable. (Carroll, Sweeney, & Shepperd,
The progressive movements throughout time can be profoundly expressed through the eyes of the optimistic. The persistent world view that interprets situations and events as being simply the best is not just a mental attitude, but a type of character which cannot be changed. One can argue that an optimistic person will be sanguine nearly in every burdensome situation in order to try to find something positive in it. Without optimism, of course, the world would never be so colorful and different; there would be no inventions, masterpieces of art, or graceful architecture. With the disappearance of the outlook of positive beliefs and standards, finding the strength to push through to the bright side is as heavy as hundreds of bricks resting on
This provides them with a larger opportunity to have a successful future. To achieve this, those people continue to follow their goals and strive to do their best. Optimism has been able to impact me in many different ways. By being optimistic, I am able to reach my personal goals and have a positive view on my life. This has allowed me to overcome some challenging parts in life and keep moving forward. Though many quotes can be associated with optimism, the one that stuck with me was, ‘“Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement”’ - Helen Keller ("Optimism Quotes”). This quote on optimism allows a variety of people to understand that if they want something to happen, they need to continue to strive for that goal until it is
Optimistic: Try to bring positivity in your employees, encourage them to come up with better ideas to solve the problems, help them overcoming their own problems and doubts, and spread optimistic throughout your organization.
“A pessimist is one who makes difficulties of his opportunities and an optimist is one who makes opportunities of his difficulties” ~ Harry Truman.
These phycologists have wondered if there are more optimist or pessimists in the world. They have made an attempt to find out what approach is greater or better. There are some advantages to optimism because it makes people feel better about life, however, there are also some advantages to pessimism in that looking at the unfortunate side of things can help some pessimists cope better with the world. Both optimism and pessimism have important roles to play the lives of everybody. Being optimist permits people to go after their goals in a positive way, to dream bigger and better dreams, which they can strive to work towards. Optimist also tend to respond better to positive feedback, and a part of being an optimist may be producing this feedback for themselves, example, thinking positive thoughts. While on the other hand, being pessimistic may help people to better acknowledge negative feedback and reduce their natural anxiety to perform better. Once again, part of the reason why pessimist generates negative thoughts is that it helps them perform a lot better. People tend to utilize both optimism and pessimism in order for them gain out of their advantages. People who are mainly concerned with growth or advancement often manifest an optimistic view, whereas those who are concerned with safety and security, or avoiding negative outcomes, focus more on pessimism in order to improve their
...fect well-being as it is said that optimists use different strategies to cope in critical life situations than pessimists do. Coetzee and Schreuder (2009) also mention that an optimist will perceive changes as positive and work harder to adapt to them.
