Shih Tzu, a name that has a meaning of Little Lions in ancient China. These loving canines were given as gifts to ancient Chinese emperors. Distinct from 3 other types of canines, Shih Tzu’s breed are placed in the toy group. They have a variety of common health concerns of their size. Shih Tzu canines are known to be happy, loving house dogs. Aside from their stubbornness they love to interact with their family. Following their owners from room to room is one of their favorite activities. Grooming must be done very often due their fur getting tangled causing it to get matted. Breathing problems may occur due to abnormally small wind pipe also known as the trachea. Another would be allergies which causes a variety of symptoms such as; excessive scratching, ear problems, and skin infections. These allergies are mainly caused by food allergies. Shih Tzu can be allergic to any type of food protein or carbohydrate in their food. Beef, pork, turkey, chicken, eggs, soy, wheat, and corn are the main causes to the allergies in this specific breed. Other health concerns are IVD disease which is found more in the dwarf (chondrodystrophic) breeds such as Shih Tzu. Intervertebral disk disease can occur in the neck, or in the lower region of the back also known as lumbosacral. In some cases of IVD disease it may affect the spinal cord and cause discomfort. In more severe cases it can cause paralysis in the rear legs of a dog. Also hypothyroidism is a major health concern due to the thyroid gland not producing enough of a hormone that is necessary for proper metabolism. It can be both an amusing and a frustrating experience with Shih Tzu owners. Patients and consistency is the key to training all canines but more with your little lion. Being a well socialized puppy they are easier to train as well as easier to live with and enjoy. Always keeping them on a leash helps with the training environment by showing control. Training to socialize helps with the safety not only in your dog but other dogs an potential visitors. Socialization training should be almost immediately upon getting the pet. Not training your pet socialization can or improper training can cause the dog to very startling and frightened animals. Socializing is one of the most valuable lessons a pet can be taught. Showing them the world is a safe place with kind, friendly animals. Teething toys is a must for training any breed of canine. Showing them that biting and chewing on things (other than their teething toys) is very unacceptable. One of the second most important things is you want your pet house trained you must potty train. Also crate training is important but when training you do not want to force the canine into the crate or use the crate as any form of discipline. As for medical care on your, grooming is a mandatory thing for your Shih Tzu. Matting occur very easily as their fur will grow and grow nonstop. It is not just their fur being tangled it also causes pain
