Malcolm Gladwell, author and journalist for The New Yorker, explains, "Those were the ingredients of success at the highest level: passion, talent and hard work." (239) We don’t really look back on our lives, once successful, and wonder how we got there. We do not wonder if we are successful because of luck or grit, but what if that was the question? What if we needed or wanted to know what determines our success. That is the case of Sheryl Sandberg, although these two go hand in hand it is most certain that Sandberg's success was majorly dependent on grit. Sandberg is an author as well as the COO of Facebook. She wrote a feminist manifesto, Lean In, that led her to a spot on the Top 100 Most Influential People in the World. Sandberg is such an inspiration. She was the eldest of her siblings as well as the children on the block, where she lived. Sandberg states, "I ...allegedly spent my time organizing shows that I could direct and clubs that I could run" (249). These are not per-say normal tasks for children of an early age, while other kids her age would have been riding bikes or playing tag, she preferred to be in control. She enjoyed what most adults despise. These allegations prove that from an early age Sandberg was already hard a work building an empire. The only difference from then to now is that at an early age her empire was clubs and shows with the help of the children on the block.
