Silverstein likes to write humorous poetry that sometimes include drawings and is also known well for writing to children of young age. His poetry is often mixed with seriousness and silliness. Silverstein had an interest in music as well. For example, in 1960, Silverstein was interested in folk music and at some point in his life, he began writing his own musical works. Additionally, Silverstein participated in making his own plays, one of which was called “The Lady or The Tiger Show”. Overall, Silverstein was more than just a poet; he was also an actor as well as an artist in drawings and music.

From the battlefield to the city street, Shel Silverstein found a platform for his creativity through drawing and writing. Silverstein was born in Chicago, Illinois on September 25th, 1930 and his death occurred from a heart attack, which happened in Key West, Florida on May 10, 1999 ( His creativity in writing and drawing came out at quite a young age ( “He started out as a cartoonist, publishing work in Playboy and the military publication Star & Stripes, before turning to children’s books” (The Poetry Foundation). He found his talent in not only creating cartoons, but also in other creative areas, which consisted of poetry, music, and writing ( The person who influenced him to start writing for children was book editor, Ursula Nordstrom.
