The functionality of America would not be as novel or ingenious without religion, a monumental influence in the building of the United States. If we trace back hundreds of years to colonial times, religion acted as the absolute driving force that convinced colonists that America was the new haven they had been looking for. It also contributed long lasting moral, social, and political impacts seen in countless movements reflecting the christian ideals of truth, life without sin, and altruism, or good works. Lastly, religious liberty is a major campaign so trite that one will find religious tolerance laws in every state as well as various religious tolerance groups with ease. Patently, the rudiments of religion are responsible for shaping the world we live and enjoy today.

The absence of religious tolerance that pushed colonists from Europe to the newly founded England colonies sprang from the belief, held by both Protestants and Catholics, that unity of religion must exist in any given society at a given time. The belief basically said that one religion must completely dominate a country for a peaceful time of actuality. This conviction rested on yet another belief that there was one absolute true religion and that it was the duty of the government to ensure the dominance of this unity, with force, in the interest of "saving the souls" of all people in the government's grasp. Opposition grew during this time against the supposed correct sense of religious unity. All of those who were angry enough to voice their opinions became the dominant groups that founded America, known then as the New World. If anything, these conflicts helped stretch the geographic and social boundaries by which religion can be practiced and valued.

Religion has had an immense effect on the moral, social, and political functionality of America. The founders of religion have built rudiments that radiate the founders beliefs and morals which have spread to the modern institutions of tolerance and coexistence. Not only does religion provide a moral basis for almost all family structures of the day, it provides a safe haven for outcasted groups seen in the synthesis of the nation like African Americans, homosexuals, and others. Religion will always be synonymous with peace and acceptance in our nation.
