SEXISM IN THE WORKFORCE Sexism has been around for a long time and it’s still going on today. You see sexism in almost anything, where they get treated unfairly or being degraded by a man or society. One of the biggest places that affects woman in sexism would be in the work force. Woman have been portrayed as inferior inside and outside the house hold. The work force is defined by social structures from patriarchal perspectives. Elimination of gender roles, equal job opportunities and needs a sense of justice. According to Leunig (2012), in our society women dominate the part time job market while men have the full time. The reason for that is because women tend to have more needs than men and reasons to not be in a job, for example if a woman is pregnant she won’t be able to come to work at a certain point or would have to go on break because of that. Employers have always paid men more even at the same job, according this article “Sexism at work” the only difference in productivity of a job is that man are typically stronger than woman. A research it talks about in Sweden took a survey in a cigar making company and it was a good idea because it didn’t take strength to make a cigar nor was it really important in this industry, it was more of the productivity of making cigars. How they did the study is by calculating their pays, experience, age, and so on. From what they already found in their pays was that men were being paid men’s wages and women were being paid woman’s wages, with it having a big difference. Another things they found was that men were more likely to be promoted in the company even if a woman was having the same productivity as a man. Women couldn’t get the same job opportunities as a man could because at the cigar company supervisors and managers were male dominate. Women still get paid 77 cents to every dollar that a man makes. This not only perpetuates sexism in an extremely obvious way, it is also one of the most harmful. While being catcalled, or subtly put down can be a detriment to women’s psyche, the wage gap is harmful to a women’s physical and emotional well being. Most people say that in order to make a big career change, the person changing jobs should have enough money saved to live on for a full year. This is a pretty logical idea, however, this is something that is much easier for men to accomplish, given that they are paid a higher wage. They have the ability to put money away, whereas it is more likely that a women is going to have to spend all her wages just on living. She won’t be able to leave a job, even if she hates it, simply because she can not afford to. A man with her same qualifications may not have to worry about this due to the fact that he has on average 23 more cents per every dollar, than she does. This to me seems like the root of sexism, and one of the first things we as a society needs to fix in order to help woman feel more equal in the world.

Sexism or discrimination based on gender has been a social issue for many years; it is the ideology that one sex is superior or inferior to the other. Women are capable of doing the same jobs that men do. At Target there is no college degree needed for team member status or even in next level up, the team leader positions. If a possible team member is still in high school that can be worked around for certain work centers. Being an equal opportunity employer means there are team member of any age and all backgrounds. Sexism has been extremely prevalent in the world since the start of agricultural societies. As groups of people moved from their hunting gathering practices and into agricultural women weren’t needed to keep the group alive. Their role in society was demoted to that of bearing children and therefore they were considered only fit for housework and weren’t included in hard labor. This was the beginning of deep seated sexism that carries on into the modern day. We have seen many examples of this throughout history from high levels of abuse in Ancient Rome, European witch hunts viciously attacking women and leading to around 51,000 deaths, extreme amounts of sexism surrounding the modern military, and even carrying into today. We see recurring patterns of unfair accusations directed toward women, physical abuse, and even murder. There are many ways in which we have improved the treatment of women throughout history, but there are also many ways in which we can still improve.

This phenomenon is referred to as “acquaintance rape” and often occurs, because as the differences in communication explains, men are more likely to perceive others as being seductive, which can also explain why they are more likely to invite sexual activity in the workplace, especially men who have negative ideas about women (Matlin, 2012, pg. 427). There can be no acceptable justification for this as your gender should not determine how much you get paid for a job. Women are being paid less for working efficiently for the same hours simply because they are women. Your gender defines you biologically, some may say emotionally (which again is an overlooked issue of gender inequality) but in no way does it determine how competent you are at a job. Without a doubt, there are males in a workplace who lack sufficient amount of knowledge and skill to be in the position they are currently at but are simply handed that position for the reason that their opposition is a female. In many cases, jobs which require similar skills, experiences and qualifications, pay workers less if dominated by women rather than men since men are seen as being more efficient than women for physical tasks.
