Most stories have a conflict within them, and most of them have winners. In the story “Seventh Grade”, the main conflict is internal. An internal conflict occurs within a person’s mind. While on the other hand, in the story “Melting Pot” the main conflict is external, which takes place between groups of people. The conflict that occurs in “Seventh Grade” takes place in Victor’s mind, who is the main character. This happens when he tries to speak French and impress his crush, Teresa. When he gets to French class the teacher, Mr. Bueller asks if anyone can speak French and Victor raises his hand. When Mr. Bueller calls on him, he tries to speak French. When he does this, Mr. Bueller begins to realize that Victor really does not know French. Victor just keeps on talking, thinking that Teresa really thinks that he knows French. Victor hopes that after class Mr. Bueller does not bust him out. When the bell rings to go to the next class, Victor shot out of the room trying to avoid the stares of the other kids. When he looked at Mr. Bueller he was erasing the chalkboard. Victor pleaded with his eyes for Mr. Bueller not to tell Teresa that he really does not know French. The old timers are fuming because they think the new moneyed professionals are taking over their town; however, the professionals are tired of being blamed for the neighborhood’s rising rents; particularly, since they are the ones paying for them. The old timers are skeptical of the new ones. The new ones think the old ones are bigots; nevertheless, on a micro level most of them get along. This story does not have a winner because none of them win each other over. “Seventh Grade” and “Melting Pot” both have conflicts; however, they are different.
