Recently I have been assigned to choose and short term as well as a long-term goal to attempt to accomplish. In this paper I will walk you through the steps that I took and the emotions that I went through during this process. My first initial thoughts about picking goals, was that it was going to be easy; turns out the process was actually a lot more difficult than I had anticipated. My purpose of this paper is not only to share with you my personal experience through this assignment, but also to give some inspiration to never give up on something that your heart desires. When this happened, I went to my teacher and talked with him or her about the issues I was having. One class in particular, I couldn’t understand the reading material, I tried reading it several times but just couldn’t comprehend the subject. After struggling, I went to my teacher and asked her what else I could do to learn the material, so that I don’t fail anymore test. She suggested that there was a video that I could check out from the library, covering the dissuasions we would have in class this semester. I also did some extra credit that was on the syllabus to bring up my test grade, untimely bringing my grade up to an A. After sometime, I got burnt out and wanted to make more money and not have the responsibilities of taking care of the whole company pretty much by myself. I still loved the field but felt like I was doing too much for little pay; therefore, leading me to my long-term goal of wanting to be a dental hygienist. Remembering the DAAPS tool that I learned in one of my classes, I began to break this goal down. I now plan to have a PHD as a dental hygienist by December 31, 2020 and be able to start the journey of this career in 2021. This year I decided to enroll back into Eastfield Community College to start the process of achieving this long-term goal. Since then I have gone to advising with a few different advisors, as well as financial aid and a organization called Trio, which is a combo of both financial aid and more advising planning. I have also created a plan, where I know exactly what classes’ I’m tacking for the next 2 years as well as what I will need to take when I transfer. Looking at different schools, I found TWU to fit my career path and have researched the campus and the department they offer for my career field. My deadline for my long-term goal is achievable, because I already know exactly how long it will take me if I stay on my specific path that has been planned out. This process has been very tedious and stressful to say the least, but since my heart is in it, I
The final aspect of setting SMART goals is that they must be time bound. Simply, it is necessary to have a deadline for which the goal must be completed. If the deadline is a long way off, set hallmarks along the way. This will contribute to measuring your success and help you to keep moving toward the ultimate goal (KPW, 2010). For example, I only have financial aid for a specific amount of time which means that I must take the time that is needed to pursue my degree because my course has a specific target date as to when everything should be complete.
Everyone's goals and desires are different. One person's idea of happiness will be a lot different than another's. I have found the best approach to setting goals is the simple approach. Break it down into categories and then expound on each one. Do some brainstorming
By using the S.M.A.R.T. goal system, you are able to make your dreams a reality, one small step at a time. The first step in reaching a long-term goal is to understand the S.M.A.R.T. the goal process. Simply using the words specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-bound can be a bit confusing. After a bit of research, I was able to better define the method. Using a S.M.A.R.T. Goal worksheet provided by Tatt (2012).
People need to think intelligently and set goals that are specific to their needs, making it possible to achieve their goals by making sure they are measurable and realistic and making it possible to build a support system around them; furthermore, they also need to set a deadline with time frames that can be met. Chanika Charles stated that “young people are at risk of being gobbled up by despair, overcome by conditions beyond their control” (A17). To avoid this, people need to start motivating themselves and getting excited about what they want to achieve, making sure their goals are relevant to their needs and being more perseverance when situations become difficult. When setting up their goals, they must ask that magic question: is this relevant to my lifestyle, furthermore, what will I do to achieve it?
After doing the developmental plan of my personal goal, I felt that this was an eye opener for me. I always have a plan just like a bucket list, but went I started writing out each topic of my personal goals and thought everything out it gave me a clear vision of what my goal really meant to me. My grades in the class looked promising, I excelled at the writing and multiple choice portions of the practice tests we took during class. All seemed well until the big test came in May. My teacher told the class that we should not take the make-up test later in the month but instead take the test on the regular test day, regardless if we were sick or not. And just my luck, I was sick on testing day! Not wanting to disappoint my teacher, I took the test while completely ill. All of my studying and hard work paid off because I passed… with a 3. I was devastated. The elusive 5 was taunting me. But I did have a second chance. A time of redemption, which was the AP US History test.
Many issues and problems emerge in organizations that require action by leadership in order to maximize productivity. Because numerous decisions are made on any given day in an attempt for a school or organization to operate as smoothly as possible, constant effort and energy is required to monitor an organization’s culture. A problematic situation in my current organization that is rooted in employee motivation and attitudes is the lack of satisfaction communicated by group members. A year ago, the organization participated in a culture assessment that was conducted by the Kentucky School Boards Association (KSBA). This audit was ordered by our executive director because of the displeasure and dissatisfaction employees were communicating and displaying while at work. The
