An example of Roberts’s leadership in action that demonstrates his leadership talent is the way he empowers all of us everyday. According to the PowerPoint’s, “an effective leader empowers others by providing them with information, responsibility, authority, and trust”(Hanen 2016). Robert is constantly informing us with the tax regulations that are essential. Additionally, he makes us responsible for the tasks that he assigns us. Also, he provides us with authority by letting us decide how we should arrange the daily tasks. Lastly, he demonstrates that he trusts us by expecting us to get the work done effectively and efficiently. Consequently, this allows us to feel like we have a great impact on VITA because our input is valuable.

He does not boss us around just because he has the title of a leader. Throughout the day, he is doing different tasks. Initially, his assigned tasks are to electronically submit the tax returns and help us with any questions that we may have. However, he does not limit himself to these simple tasks. He also prepares returns and thoroughly guides us on preparing tax returns. This type of leadership is known as servant leadership. A servant leadership is focuses on other’s needs instead of their own (Hanen 2016). Recent studies prove that servant leadership is adequate but many still take other forms of leadership (Heskett). Jim Heskett, author of article “Why isn’t Servant Leadership more Prevalent”, states that individuals avoid servant leadership because they are only focused on short term results. Consequently, Robert maintains servant leadership because he focuses on maintaining the relationships that he creates. Furthermore, Robert is a directive leader because he is capable of implementing regulations. He is a supportive leader because he creates a friendly environment so we can feel comfortable while we volunteer. He is an achievement-oriented leader because he always sets a time limit on our work. As a result, this challenges us to stay within the time frame that he requires. Lastly, Robert is a participative leader because he is constantly empowering us. For example, he is open to hearing our suggestions and implementing them into our daily routines. According to the article “The Path-Goal Theory of Leadership in Companies”, “Each leadership behavior aims to maximize worker outcomes by recognizing the impact of both environmental factors and worker characteristics in job performance”(Cross).
