When my Great Grandma died, I wanted to give something back to the place that took such good care of her. Making a quilt for my senior project gave me a chance to help elderly people that are in the same place my grandma was at. It also gave me the chance to improve my sewing skills and learn how to make a more complex quilt. By making a quilt and donating it to Le Chateau Nursing Home, I learned new sewing skills and got a good feeling donating to a local place.
My project was to make a quilt and donate it to a local nursing home. I planned to meet with Carla Bower, a local quilter, and discuss where to meet to work on the quilt and what types of fabric and materials I need to start. The quilt I made is 25 blocks, 4 pieces of fabric in each block, 2 main borders, and a solid color back. I’ve made simple patch quilts before, but I wanted to go a step further. My quilt has smaller pieces of fabric and a more complicated instructions than I was used to. Carla helped me figure out the steps by showing me how to iron and dew a certain way to make it the best it could be. The nursing home I donated it to I’m pretty familiar with. My grandma was there for a few months and they were very good to her and I’m glad I could give something to the current residents.
I started at Joann Fabrics trying to figure out what fabrics I wanted to use. My mom took me there and helped me figure out what fabrics to get. I was having trouble making a decision on what fabrics to get so I used my quilt book as a reference. My mom pointed out that the border had owls on it so she helped me find my border which was off-white with multi colored birds and flowers. I wanted to make 2 different block patterns so I needed to find 8 different fabrics to use for the...

...t will help me in the future. For my resume I can put down that I have sewing skills as one of my qualities. This will give me more opportunities for jobs in the sewing/ crafting field. Completing this quilt has shown me that I might want to look into a job that includes sewing in it. My career that I’m focusing on right now is baking and eventually opening my own bakery. Improving my sewing skills with this project I could include in my future bakery. I have the skills so I could make tablecloths, curtains, or decorations for my bakery.
Learning new sewing skills and donating my quilt to a local nursing home made me feel accomplished. Finishing my project, I felt good about myself knowing I gave back to the place that gave love to my grandma when she was at her worst. This was the best project I could have done for myself and the duty to fulfill my senior project.
I’m so happy to be given the opportunity to join National Junior Honor Society(NJHS). I would love to be a member. I think it is important for kids to be involved in the community. Also, myself personally it would be an honor to be a face for our school.
In "Everyday Use" by Alice Walker, two sisters want the handmade quilt that is a symbol of the family heritage. Alice Expresses what her feeling are about her heritage through this story. It means everything to her. Something such as a quilt that was hand made makes it special. Only dedication and years of work can represent a quilt.
...made for, she no longer offers much imagery to the reader. The story comes to an end as the mother reminds Dee that she was once offered the quilts and refused them because she thought they were "old fashioned and out of style" (880). She also turns the table on Dee by snatching the quilts out of Dee's hands and dumping them into Maggie's lap. She tells Dee to get a couple of the other quilts, and with that said, Dee storms out.
As a student at Northvale Public School, I have grown up with my older siblings being inducted into an organization called the National Junior Honor Society. I had seen all the hard work and dedication they put into their school work and activities just to get into this society, making me want to be just like them. Then a few weeks ago, I found a note on my desk in homeroom telling me that I had been nominated to be apart of this society. Through citizenship and character, leadership, and service, I intend on being inducted into the society I have heard so much about. Though it will take a lot of effort this school year, being a part of this society is a dream of mine that I will make sure to come true.
People have all different kinds of values, wants, needs, long-term goals, and short-term goals. Their differences come from many places such as religion or age. These differences are what makes each individuals values, wants, and needs make them unique to each person individually. My values, wants, needs, long-term, and short-term goals are all unique to myself.
Becoming an intrical part of the National Junior Honor Society would be a great privilege. NJHS established in 1929. From its conception, it has validated five guiding principles, which are; enthusiasm for scholarship, desire to render service, leadership, responsible citizenship, and development of character. Thus, I would not only like to join for the academic recognition, but to further develop and challenge myself within these areas. For many years, NJHS has paved a road to success for many alumni. Hopefully soon, I will be counted amongst them.
When a student gets out of college the game plan is supposed to be, get a job in the field that you went to school for and make money so you can start your life. That particular situation is rare considering not all students get a job fresh out of college. For the students that don’t, they have to go back home and settle for a regular job and start paying off their giant student loans and put their life on hold. Even with having the job they wanted the student loans come right around the corner. After college is when the student’s life is supposed to start and the part where you get a car payment, pay rent, utilities, but none of that is possible when you add the enormous amount of money that the student will be in debt by. With the amount the students have to pay fresh out of college, more students are sacrificing more time struggling to pay off the student loans then they spent in school. Student loans are set-up in a way to be flawed and not always completely necessary to the student.
Hesiod’s Theogony and the Babylonian Enuma Elish are both myths that begin as creation myths, explaining how the universe and, later on, humans came to be. These types of myths exist in every culture and, while the account of creation in Hesiod’s Theogony and the Enuma Elish share many similarities, the two myths differ in many ways as well. Both myths begin creation from where the universe is a formless state, from which the primordial gods emerge. The idea of the earth and sky beginning as one and then being separated is also expressed in both myths.
The quilts were pieced together by Mama, Grandma Dee, and Big Dee symbolizing a long line of relatives. The quilts made from scraps of dresses worn by Grandma Dee, Grandpa Jarrell’s Paisley shirts, and Great Grandpa Ezra’s Civil War uniform represented the family heritage and values, and had been promised to Mama to Maggie when she married. However, Dee does not understand the love put into the making of the quilts, neither does she understand the significance of the quilts as part of her family heritage. It is evident she does not understand the significance of the quilt, having been offered one when went away to college declaring them “as old-fashioned” and “out of style”. She does not care about the value of the quilts to her family, rather she sees it as a work of art, valuable as an African heritage but not as a family heirloom. She wants the quilts because they are handmade, not stitched with around the borders. She tells Mama, “Maggie can’t appreciate these quilts!... She’d probably be backward enough to put them to everyday use… But, they’re priceless!.. Maggie would put them on her the bed and in five years they’d be in rags. Less than that!” (317). The quilt signifies the family pride and history, which is important to Mama. She makes the decision to give the quilt to Maggie who will appreciate it more than Dee, to whom she says, “God knows I been saving ‘em for long enough with
One of the first thing a freshman hears or thinks about when going to college is the legendary “freshman fifteen.” The freshman fifteen is defined as a fifteen pound average weight gain that happens during a student’s first year in college. This problem has affected many freshmen because it causes them to fear that they are going to gain weight when they go off to college, but the undetected truth of this case is that a lot of freshmen lose or gain under fifteen pounds. To solve this ongoing problem, colleges and universities should incorporate more healthy food items on campus, provide student cooking, and create fitness and wellness housing.
To begin with, a quilt is defined as a “coverlet made of scrapes and fragments stitched together to form a pattern” (Webster). The quilt in “Everyday Use” was made by Grandma Dee, Big Dee, and Mama from scraps of dresses and shirts and is part of Grandpa’s Civil War uniform. It is filled with memories and was hand stitched by the family. Mama suggests that Dee take other ones, but Dee rejects the offer because they were “stitched by machine”(Walker, p.114) and the old ones were done by hand. Mama says that she had promised them to Maggie.
I wanted to give back to my community, and maybe I didn’t give back to everyone, but I gave those two girls an outlet and someone to care about them. This type of caring and compassion is

I strive to be an Athletic Physical Therapist, and volunteering at Saint Charles Parish Hospital helped me plan for the future. I enjoyed the atmosphere and interacting with patients who needed my attention. Volunteering at a hospital further influenced my decision for a career by providing me with the opportunity to view myself in similar surroundings.
