SELF-DESCRIPTION:
When I first came to high point, I had a lot of bad habits that I picked up while coming up throughout the high school system of my home country Trinidad & Tobago. I had a lot of unhealthy study habits which I never really took time to notice. I had horrible note taking skills, I had a very short concentration/attention span when I lacked interest in a subject and worst of all I had zero time management skills.
Coming up in high school I was an intelligent and capable student but I never used to apply myself to my work. I would slack off during the term and do little or no work, as this only counted for 30% of my final grade. I would not attend class and I wouldn't do most of the homework assignments in the classes that I did go to. When finals came around, I would put in a few weeks of really hard studying, as this was worth the remaining 70% of your grade, and end up with about an 80% or 75%, which in some cases would get me and A in the class.

All my life I have been a lazy person, doing just enough to get by. Most of the time, in high school, I was content with just a “C”. The only time I wasn’t, was if it was a class I liked, and I paid attention to. If this was the case, I could have received a 99% on a test and been dissatisfied. But, for the rest of my classes, which were most of my classes, that I didn’t like, I never paid attention to or did homework, and I still managed to do well on tests. So basically I didn’t do anything except take tests and I still got satisfactory grades. In school I was so lazy that there could have been a project due worth about 20% of the final grade and I still wouldn’t do it.
One has achieved success who has lived well and laughed often. '; This quote seems to sum up what is meant by success. If you are able to laugh often and much then you have definitely achieved happiness. The idea of living well, though, is a very broad statement. In order, then, to define success in relation to this statement, we must first define what it means to live well. There are three levels of success, in my opinion: societal success, academic or professional success. If someone can achieve all of these three levels of success, they are someone who has lived well.
As a counselor in training, there are many skills that I still need to improve. Being able to work with actual clients broaden my view of counseling. Clients would discuss experiences that are unexpected to the counselor, and counselors need to be ready at any moment. It is fascinating for me to learn that although clients might be experiencing similar difficulties such as anxiety or depression, each client has a unique story behind them. Although I encounter some difficulties working with clients, being able to apply the skills that we learned in actual session helps me to further understand how to work with them. In comparison to practicing with colleagues, working with actual clients helps me have a better sense of how to better interact with them. Other than that, I was able to experience how clients would react to counselors’ comments or questions. It is important to learn that clients do not always respond the way that the counselor wants them to.
I started high school with pretty similar goals as I did college, I hoped to be as involved as possible, get good grades, and make friends. I summed this list up as just wanting to have a normal life during my four years, but as easy as this may have sounded it was a bit of a struggle and not just for the classic high school teen drama. Before the age of 1, I was brought into the hospital with just over a 105 degree fever followed by frequent hospitalizations throughout my childhood. I was later diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder, so basically I was ten times more likely to get sick, followed with a sickness that was twenty times worst for me followed by a night in the hospital almost every time. I just liked to stay in the middle. I really didn 't feel like it mattered to me or to anyone if I did more than what was required of me. I never saw the need to go above and beyond when it came to school. The times that I have I never felt like i got anything from it. This is how many students feel and they shouldn 't feel this way. Mike Rose said in one of his articles “ I just wanna be average” that “He provided a role model that wasn 't shaped on physical prowess alone, and something inside me that I wasn 't quite aware of responded to that”. Mike Rose was a student who always wanted to just be average in school and never felt good if he ever went above and beyond. So one school year he had a teacher named MacFarland who helped him a ton and motivated him. She challenged him a lot and gave him a lot of work, readings, essays, assignments and just in general a lot of work. It was a lot but it all helped him a ton and it made Mike Rose become a student who actually wanted to do homework. McFarland turned Mike into a student who actually wanted to be the best in class and Mike just felt so much more motivated. He ended up being very successful to this day. I did not fail my classes but my grades were a failure for me because I held myself up to high standards. My desire to do better motivated me to take any steps I could in order to improve my grades. Everyday after school I attended the student learning center until I fully understood what I needed to know for each class. In addition to this, I dedicated at least two hours a day to homework and studying. By doing this I learned how to study effectively. Effective studying skills are skills that I have continued to use throughout high school and will use throughout college. Before I started working towards better work ethics my priorities were not in order and from then on I made sure that my academics came first. These work ethics allowed me to grow and I was eventually able to teach myself without relying on the student learning center and as a result I saw achieved
As I started to advance into my high school education, I noticed that my attitude about school and grades was not going to get me anywhere. I went to school and goofed off with my friends and did enough work to get a decent 70 on my work and go home. I had no “active responsibility”, as Freire would say, because I didn’t have anything to motivate me to want to do well. It all changed when I started high school at Bear Grass Charter School. During my first year at Nazareth College, I feel that I have made an incredibly seamless transition to college life and I believe that this has everything to do with my Academic and College Success Class. Through such assignments such as the Identity and Goal Setting Assignment, the Myers-Briggs test, creating SMART goals, and defining our own success definitions have really helped me to grow into who I am, not only as an individual, but as a college student as well. I feel very comfortable with who I am at this point in my life, even though I am not entirely sure still who that is yet and I am incredibly excited to grow as a college student, daughter, sister, and friend.
As this semester has begun, and I have begun to adjust to this course’s requirements, expectations, and goals I have found myself taking more risks and challenging my prior writing style. I’ve been a little apprehensive with my writing style this semester and feel that at times I may be missing the entire ideas of the topic. Although I do the work and get a good grade, I always feel uncertain before posting a blog or turning in my final assignment. Although the entire courses topic is nothing foreign to me it has become a challenge for me to write about.
When it comes to school, I have always been an “A” only student. I am slightly obsessed with my grades, and I have never had a “B” in my life. Originally, this pressure was put on by my parents, but now I am self-driven and I do not allow myself to have anything lower than an “A-”. Achieving no lower than an “A-” consists of lots of hard work and time management. Unlike many other students, I have always been one to complete my homework as soon as possible. I believe it is important for any student who wants to do their best in a class to take a moment to evaluate their own work to determine the rate their writing is progressing and how they can continue to advance their writing. When I looked through my own work I asked myself “what have I learned this semester?” and “what do I still need to learn in order to improve my writing?”. Answering both these questions will help me with my last step of my self-evaluation, developing a plan to learn new skills.
Well I guess I’ll start off this paper by being outright honest. I have never done this type of self-assessment exercise. So I’ll start this paper off with what exactly this type of self-assessment is. These types of self-assessments are meant to help show the individual (me) where my strengths lie and also where my weaknesses are as well so that I may try and lean on my strengths while improving on my own shortcomings. Essentially the Johari Window four regions model that we learned about is a great tool for this assessment. The first region is also known as the open area, which essentially means that this is what is known by the person about him/herself and is also know by others. The second region is known as the blind area in which this is information unknown by the individual but is known by others. Which could be behaviors that an individual does but does not realize that they are doing them. The third window is known as the hidden area. This area is essentially information that only you know about yourself and others do not. The fourth area is known as the unknown area. It’s known as that because this is information that you and others do not know about you. It’s when you take a look at these four areas and see your strengths and/or weaknesses are at and if you allow yourself to become open to feedback you then can improve on your own shortcomings and become a better leader.
I was sometimes slower at completing a written paper or an assignment. In open discussions about material we had just read, things weren’t sticking with me after reading to feel confident to raise my hand and be active with discussions. I would have to search for answers in my memory for some time. Sometimes answers just weren’t retrieved at all. I became frustrated in school often, and eventually developed a negative attitude toward school. I struggled a lot with this because I knew I could do better. Every day I prepared myself for failure because I lacked the tools and strategies that I needed to succeed in school. Granted, I got by, but I could have been a much better student. I earned low B’s and C’s, but should have been A’s.
The evaluation document is a representation of my present teaching ability, and the target areas that I will improve on. I taught the Hooke’s lab investigation, so I grouped students in pairs and had them work in their lab stations. Given the lab stations set up–in aisles–, I decided to have three groups of students work on each side of the aisles; however, the aisles were narrow and the students barely had space to move through them. I did not ask the students to move to other areas of the classroom to prevent losing their focus, but this is something I will be more cautious about in the future. I have to provide a safe classroom environment that allows students to have ample space to work in, so I will verify that I provide the needed space in future classes. I originally thought that proximity would enable adjacent groups to discuss their findings with each other, but even I had a hard time walking through the aisles to reach struggling groups.
