In the story “The Metamorphosis” Gregor starts at the top of Maslow's hierarchy of need. As the story goes on Gregor loses self-esteem. Gregor wants to give up, he feels that he isn’t loved. I noticed that Gregor’s family honestly just used him, because they were in debt, so he paid it off. In the end Gregor’s family seemed better off without him, they were out of debt and his father didn’t rely on him anymore. Gregor’s self-actualization was high at the beginning. He had a good job, and helped his family out. Everything slowly went down as one morning he woke up from dreaming and realized he was a bug. As Kafka wrote “One morning, samsa woke from a troubled dream, he found himself transformed in his bed into a horrible vermin.” At first he got scared about his job because he liked it and thought he would get fired. After a while his self esteem goes down because his family doesn’t like him. Gregor’s self esteem went down, when his family was afraid of him. He didn’t know how to move, and he was afraid to for anyone to see him. “The thing he wanted to do was to get up in peace without being disturbed,to get dressed, and most of all to have his breakfast.” Although if I turned into a bug I wouldn’t want anyone to see …show more content…

Gregor loses the love of his family. Although Grete still cares for him it is hard for him. His father would beat him with a cane and throw food at him. As Kafka wrote “ It was an apple; then another one immediately flew at him;Gregor froze in shock; there was no longer any point of running as his father had decided to bombard him”. Gregor doesn’t even feel safe living in his house anymore. He stops eating, and gets exhausted from trying to fight back.
