Self concept, environment, and multicultural identity can impact a student 's academic performance. My educational experiences contributed to development of my social identities. My education affected my self concept in multiple aspects. My time from kindergarten to senior year as a student in the Downingtown Area School District affected my perception of myself and my beliefs about my ability to succeed. The Downingtown Area School District was ranked remarkably high, and the schools were ranked at the top on a list of the leading schools in Pennsylvania. The rankings of the schools in the district are very impressive. Both high schools ranked fourth and fifth in Chester County. I typically earned high grades in my classes except for math and science. I made sure to always complete my homework, but had a difficult experience with test taking. Some teachers treated students like they could not succeed if they were not performing well in a subject. When I began classes at Immaculata, my perception of myself academically had changed because my teachers encouraged me and saw my potential. After my first semester I was invited to join the honors program which made me feel so much more positive about my performance and my ability to succeed in life. Being part of the honors program has opened various opportunities such as being able to enroll in classes that I am more interested in and I can be more engaged in. The ways of behaving at school and home were different. At school, being different was frowned upon but at home, my parents appreciated my effort. My parents sent me to a public school where there were a lot of textbooks and resources to learn. I was able to get support using my IEP and had some small, special classes where teachers could give me more attention. My concept of myself changed so much because of this when I came to Immaculata because I feel more engaged in school and motivated to learn. The multicultural identity of my school district also impacted my identity. The classrooms had a medium level of diversity and an equal number of males and females. People came from various ethnicities and a very wide range of social classes. Most teachers were able to celebrate diversity and were encouraged to respect all students, regardless of their personal beliefs and background. I was able to experience diversity in my learning
