Seeing the Light
Many times, the sensuality of life is lost because of technology. It seems that as a result of technology, life is seen differently through human eyes. Many times visions of life and its beauties are altered by technology and a shadow is placed upon all things through this vision. Often times, the only way to escape these views is to be without technology and its influences. The speaker in Raymond Carver's poem, "The Window", becomes aware of this fact when he is without electricity and realizes for the first time the beauties of nature.
Initially, Carver's title, "The Window", indicates that the poem will be about some sort of window and the way this window may look. After reading the poem, however, one sees that this is not so. In the poem, the speaker actually gives an account of the effect a simple blackout has on him as he looks out of a window. The speaker sees the trees differently, the speaker sees the countryside differently, and the speaker as a result begins to analyze himself differently.
Carver's poem is especially effective because of the point of view through which he presents it. "The Window" is brought to its readers through first person point of view. This use of the first person point of view allows Carver to step back from the story and have less of an interpretive influence. What emerges is the importance of individual perception. Had Carver presented the poem from a third person point of view, it would seem that he was viewing the scenes from the outside and the feelings from the narrator would have been less effective as those coming directly from the speaker. In "The Window", the speaker tells the reader exactly what he feels when the electricity is no longer there to blind him. The speaker reveals his personal feelings about what technology does to a picture and how much more beautiful things seem when there is nothing there to diminish the picture.
The simplicity of Carver's poem also contributes to its effectiveness. Carver could have easily attempted to confuse his reader with big words and very deep meanings. Carver chose, however, to present the poem in as simple a form as possible. Carver's theme is in no way hidden from the reader. Carver's sentences have a simple structure that presents the reader with a story-like account of what the speaker was presented with.
Rear Window and the works of Hopper are both required with confinement. Disregarding its blended utilize land setting, Early Sunday Morning does not pass on a warm, fluffy feeling of group. Carver tells the story in first person of a narrator married to his wife. Problems occur when she wants a friend of hers, an old blind man, to visit for a while because his wife has died. The narrator's wife used to work for the blind man in Seattle when the couple was financial insecure and needed extra money. The setting here is important, because Seattle is associated with rain, and rain symbolically represents a cleansing or change. This alludes to the drastic change in the narrator in the end of the story. The wife and blind man kept in touch over the years by sending each other tape recordings of their voices which the narrator refers it to being his wife's "chief means or recreation" (pg 581).
Perhaps the first thing the viewer acknowledges in the exposition of the film is the visual aspect, that being the sunlight that is shone through a window in a darkened room. We can also see tree branches and leaves dancing in the wind outside of the window. From this we figure the film is being shot from inside some sort of building. The next shot shows the shadow of what could be the same tree on the paneling of possibly a neighboring house, which supports the idea that the film is being shot form inside of a home. It is possible that Pierce intentionally used shots from outside of the home in the exposition as opposed to inside to give the viewer the idea that the house represents the lead role in the film. By introducing the piece with shots of an empty home, the viewer might expect another role to appear. In today’s modern view, poetry has become more than just paragraphs that rhyme at the end of each sentence. If the reader has an open mind and the ability to read in between the lines, they discover more than they have bargained for. Some poems might have stories of suffering or abuse, while others contain happy times and great joy. Regardless of what the poems contains, all poems display an expression. That very moment when the writer begins his mental journey with that pen and paper is where all feelings are let out. As poetry is continues to be written, the reader begins to see patterns within each poem. On the other hand, poems have nothing at all in common with one another. A good example of this is in two poems by a famous writer by the name of Langston Hughes. A well-known writer that still gets credit today for pomes like “ Theme for English B” and “Let American be American Again.”
Throughout the majority of the story Carver uses a variety of devices to portray the narrator negatively. One reason is that he lacks compassion. At the beginning of the story he says, "I wasn?t enthusiastic about his [the blind man?s] visit. He [the blind man] was no one I knew. And his [the blind man] being blind bothered me."
This change in tone echoes the emotions and mental state of the narrator. At the beginning of the poem, the narrator starts somewhat nervous. However, at the end, he is left insane and delusional. When he hears a knocking at the door, he logically pieces that it is most likely a visitor at the door.
William Carlos Williams once said, “It is not what you say that matters, but the manner in which you say it.”(Examiner) This is a view he often incorporated into his poetry. Williams’ purpose through writing poetry was not to teach a moral, but to convey that simple things can be beautiful. Although many of Williams’ poems show this beauty in simplicity, a few good examples are The Red Wheel Barrow, The Great Figure, and Young Sycamore.
The poem completes all of these aspects within just four stanzas which is quite impressive. All three of these aspects truly help readers understand the morals and details that the poem is trying to portray, and poets such as Roethke try to keep their audiences’ minds wondering why such and such occurs. The deeper meaning of poetry acts as if it is a mystery to be solved by the reader which keeps me interested and more aware of why certain things may make sense while I am reading. Any type of poetry with understandable diction, style, and imagery will absolutely help reveal the theme and keep the reader yearning to discover why the theme is the way it
I believe that the structure of this poem allows for the speaker to tell a narrative which further allows him to convey his point. The use of enjambment emphasizes this idea as well as provides a sense of flow throughout the entirety of a poem, giving it the look and feel of reading a story. Overall, I believe this piece is very simplistic when it comes to poetic devices, due to the fact that it is written as a prose poem, this piece lacks many of the common poetic devices such as rhyme, repetition, alliteration, and metaphors. The film, 'Rear Window' has an essence of 'urban isolation/ loneliness' in it. The entire film is made on one confined set. In the whole movie, the viewers can either see the apartment of the immobile protagonist, Jeff or the window views of his neighbors. With the idea of confined set, Hitchcock (director) showed the loneliness and urban isolation of Jeff. Due to his leg injury, Jeff can not go anywhere so he passes his time by peeping into his neighbors' life through his rear window and can see different stories going on in different apartments. Each apartment window is like a TV series for him, which he watches on a daily basis. This film shows the visual study of obsessive human curiosity.
Raymond Carver uses strategic dialogue and point-of-view to illuminate the themes of his stories. After reading “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love” and “ Cathedral” the reader is able to mend each piece of work together and understand how Carver creates his short stories.
Although this section is the easiest to read, it sets up the action and requires the most "reading between the lines" to follow along with the quick and meaningful happenings. Millay begins her poem by describing, in first person, the limitations of her world as a child. She links herself to these nature images and wonders about what the world is like beyond the islands and mountains. The initial language and writing style hint at a child-like theme used in this section. This device invites the reader to sit back and enjoy the poem without the pressure to understand complex words and structure.
Carver’s purpose of having the narrator of the short story use imagery allows for the reader to be able to understand each and every moment he lives while explaining the blind man’s, Robert, visit to his home. In Cathedral, the narrator tells the story very detailed and descriptive. For instance, when the narrator describes his wife’s arrival with Robert, “I saw my wife laughing as she parked the car. I saw her get out of the car and shut the door…She went around to the other side of the car to where the blind man was already starting to get out…he was wearing a full beard!” Here, the author makes the narrator describe the scene and details it as if he is describing it to a blind person. the writer allows the reader to see what he sees, to hear what he hears, and to feel what he feels, and thus experience his sensitivity to the sights and sounds of nature. This way both the writer and reader are now in harmony with one another.
The poem in brief summary allows us to experience an outsider’s view of the death of Lucy Gray and her parents’ grief. The character narrating the poem tells the story of Lucy, a girl who was sent by her father with a lantern to light the way home, for her mother in town. On her way to town a snow storm hits and Lucy is never found neither dead nor alive. The fact that a stranger is narrating the story as opposed to one of the parents telling the story, allows the reader to witness the tragedy of Lucy Gray without feeling too tangled up in the parents’ grief. By having an outsider who is in no way involved in the tragedy tell the story, the writer of the poem William Wordsworth, gives the reader an objective point of view on the tragedy as well as room to relate the reader’s own experience to the poem without feeling uncomfortable. Had the poem lacked objectivity the reader would have surely felt uncomfortable and stifled by emotions of the parents’ or a parent telling the story of their daughter’s death.
