In Sue Monk Kidd’s novel The Secret Life of Bees she indirectly characterizes the dealer, Franklin Posey, as prejudiced against black people to showcase the extreme racist attitudes in the south. An example occurs when Rosaleen poured black spit on Posey’s shoes following his verbal harassment, “ ‘Your black ass is gonna apologize one way or another,’ the dealer said, and he stepped toward Rosaleen” (36). The fact that Franklin uses profanity illustrates his contempt for Rosaleen. Further, his physical advancement toward Rosaleen indicates that he was trying to threaten and intimidate her. In The Secret Life of Bees, by Sue Monk Kidd, the bees are the ones that have the most secret life of all. They each have their own specific role to play deep within the hive. It's obvious that the author had meant for some of her characters to portray the roles that these buzzing insects have to dutifully fulfill every duty. Lily and Zach are the field bees, August is a nurse bee, and the Lady of Chains is the Queen bee.
In The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, Lily has assumptions, biases, and prejudices about race that are changing over the course of the novel. Lily was raised in an extremely racist environment with T. Ray in Sylvan. Her mother figure and her best friend were harassed just walking down the street. Even the church folks who claim to love, but I guess African-Americans didn’t count. She also had to break Rosaleen, the woman who played the mother figure in her life, out of jail.

Racism has been around since humans first walked this planet, it would seem that over the thousands of years humans have had to develop morals and socially acceptable behaviors that something as shallow as racism would be entirely abolished, but that is not the case. In the novel The Secret Life of Bees, written by author Sue Monk Kidd, the idea of racism is a constant struggle for fourteen year old Lily Owens as she embarks on a journey to find who she really is. 1964 was a difficult time for the Civil Rights movement. The conflicting tug of war between the political strides for the cause and the tension growing in prejudiced southerners. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 had just been signed into law by President John F. Kennedy, making sure the rights of African-American people were granted instead of ignored.
Everybody wants to be accepted, yet society is not so forgiving. It bends you and changes you until you are like everyone else. Society depends on conformity and it forces it upon people. In Emerson's Self Reliance, he says "Society is a joint stock company, in which the members agree, for the better securing of his bread to each shareholder, to surrender the liberty and culture of the eater." People are willing to sacrifice their own hopes and freedoms just to get the bread to survive. Although the society that we are living in is different than the one the Emerson's essay, the idea of fitting in still exists today. Although society and our minds make us think a certain way, we should always trust our better judgment instead of just conforming to society.

Popularized in a film version starring Jack Nicholson, which the class also watched in order to discuss film studies and adaptation, the novel became notable for its sympathetic portrayal of the mentally ill. For an essay about the novel, students were asked to choose a critical approach (such as feminist, formalist, psychological, and so forth) and interpret the novel using that approach, while also considering how their interpretation fit into the ongoing scholarly dialogue about the work. Lauren chose the challenge of applying a Marxist approach to One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest. Not only did she learn about critical approaches and how to apply one to a text, she wrote an excellent essay, which will help other readers understand the text better. In fact, if John Clark Pratt or another editor ever want to update the 1996 Viking Critical Library edition of the novel, then he or she might want to include Lauren's essay in the next edition!"

The novel opens with fourteen-year-old Lily Owns struggling with the knowledge that her mother was dead because she, as an infant, picked up a loaded gun and accidentally shot her. She runs away from her abusive father in search for answers of who her mother was. Lily hitchhikes to Tiburon, South Carolina; the location written on the back of an image of the Black Madonna – one of the only belongings she has of her mother’s. There, she finds a pink house inhabited by the Boatwright sisters who are African American women making Black Madonna honey. The Boatwright sisters have had their share of grief with the death of two of their sisters and the racial intolerance they face despite the passage of the Civil Rights Act. The Boatwright sisters and Lily Owens have different methods of coping with grief; internalizing, ignoring, and forgetting are some of the ways they cope, with varying degrees of success. They discover that they must live past their grief, or else it will tear them apart.
Although bigotry and segregation were pointed in majority towards blacks, other accounts towards whites were also heard of, though not as commonly. There are acts that are so discreet that you almost don't catch them, but along with those, there are blatant acts of bigotry that would never occur in our time. Lee addresses many of these feelings in her novel. One subtle example of discrimination the reader sees is the treatment of Calpurnia, a black woman, the housekeeper/nanny for the Finch family. Although she is treated fairly, it is obvious that she is considered to be on a lower social level than the Finches.
