Safety First “Click it or ticket!” The slogan that we see frequently on almost every highway, billboard, marque, and television commercial. The simple choice of wearing a seatbelt can save an enormous amount of lives. The average speed limit on an interstate highway is 70 MPH (miles per hour). Imagine being in an accident while driving on a highway. The accident can be very devastating, and tough on your physical and emotional wellbeing. Although the car will come to a complete stop, your body will still be going at the exact speed of the vehicle. This could cause serious internal injuries, or even death. With use of the seat belt, the risk of fatalities while in a motor vehicle accident is reduced by half. Seat belts work by keeping the passenger in place in the event of an automobile accident or any sudden stops. Newton’s law of inertia is the force that seatbelts protect passengers from. “Newton’s first law, an object that is in motion continues with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. This is often called the law of inertia.” In Newton’s law, the unbalanced force is the seatbelt, which acts upon the body. The seatbelt locks when triggered, enabling the straps to prevent the body from continuing at the speed of the vehicle. This is how internal damage or death is prevented. Air bags, which deploy from the dashboard in the event of a automobile accident also work in correlation with seatbelts to provide maximum safety and security. The seat belt holds your body in place against the inertia of the vehicles speed, and the airbag provides a tough cushion to keep the body or head from hitting the dashboard.
