The essay “My Father’s Son” written by Jim Fergus, Nick Lyons’ essay entitled “Finding Father”, “Every time I Spill Red Wine I Panic” written by Stratis Haviaras and the poem “My Father” by Peter Oresick all had a similar underlying theme; A sons loss of a father at an early age, the search for the guidance of their father. So, when a father is not present, where does a boy turn to for that guidance? A mother can only understand what her son is going through to a certain degree. When a young boy loses a father at an early age he does not have the chance to get to know who is father is, so he begins to search for an identity of his father. A boy or man in search of a father is in search of himself within his father, because the father was unable to be a part of the son’s life, the son thus finds his own identity when he takes on the role of a father himself.

The relationship between a father and son stems from an unspoken competition in many countries. Whether it is a physical or mental rivalry the superior role slowly transcends on to the son as he grows into a man. In Brad Manning’s short story “Arm Wrestling With My Father,” and Itabari Njeri’s “When Morpheus Held Him,” both contain admiring sons and impassive fathers. Despite both stories similarities in unspoken emotions they differ in the aspect of their physical relationships. This unrequited bond between a father and son in these stories portray various types of love.
The author emphasizes the fact that a mentor has more knowledges and experiences than a boy. In the essay, Honigsbaum uses the example of the story of Parzival. In the example, the key of the story is that when he goes for the first time to the Grail Castle, “he [is lacking] understanding and confidence” (15). After he meets the wise mentor, he goes for the second time and it is a success (15). The writer argues that with the help of a wise person, a young man will gain more knowledges and experiences. In addition, the author uses the comparison to demonstrate the similarity of his story and the example of Parzival’s story. He starts by telling about a young man which is paired with him (15). The boy says to him that he has issues and he is looking for clarity (15). Later, when he returns to see him, he tells that he will do a drumming career (16). One week later, the author calls him and he answers that “his passion for drumming was undimmed” (16). However, he is willing to change because “[he feels] a lot more stable” (16). The boy has the similar issue as the character from his example. The both need a person to help them. In brief, when a mentor helps a person, he will receive a guidance to the right path.
The relationship between a father and a son can be expressed as perhaps the most critical relationship that a man endures in his lifetime. In the beginning of the book Richard’s father leaves his mother for another woman, making life for Richard’s family even more so difficult. “ After all, my hate for my father was not so great and urgent as my hate for the orphan home,” says Richard. When his father left, Richard and his brother were put into an orphan home, in order for their mother to work. When Richard, his mother, and his brother go to try to get money from Richard’s father, all he offers is a nickel to Richard which Richard refuses. In the short story The Father by Hugh Garner there is boy who’s father is not involved in his life. This is mostly because he is always drunk. Because of this Johnny, the father’s son, has not really been able to connect with his father. He is never there for Johnny when he needs him and is always embarrassing him.
