The Application of Traditional Seamanship and 21st Century Seamanship

Seamanship is the art of operating a ship or boat. To operate a ship one have to know about navigation, general sea term, maritime law, weather, meteorology, operation of deck equipment, rope work, communication and safety at sea. Navigation is all about moving the vessel from one point to another point.

There are so many evolution have been happen to the ships, equipment used and navigation style. Now the ship officer has myriad of marine navigation equipment which makes his life a lot simpler compare to older times where the ship navigation officer had to take help of unconventional ways to plan and navigate a voyage at sea. In the traditional organization the seaman petty offices and seaman will divide within each sub-branch are divided equally between the parts of ship that give the advantage of preventing the tendency to exclusiveness and isolation and disadvantage of this method is it will make a conflict between the parts of ships and armament quarter. In the modern era seaman organization seaman will divide according to sub branch. In the newly designed life jackets it consist of small maritime battery that will give power to light up and transmit and receive SOS messages. It is also to protect from the weather and give flotation. The new life jackets also improved with pouches to contain watertight cells filled with kapok. That will provide flexibility and comfortable to the wearer. It also have some simulator to stimulating unconsciousness in freezing sea water. The routine in half holidays was set aside to repair and replace their kit but now it was replace with recreational and sport. Ship’s wheel or boat’s wheel is device used to move a water ship to change that vessel’s course. At first the ships wheel is placed in front of barrel of cylinder shape but not having same amount of slack and tightening on both sides of the rope. It will be either too tight or slack.
