Heredity is the spread of genetic characters from parents to children, this process depends on the separation and recombination of genes during meiosis (a type of cell division that results in four daughter cells each with half the number of chromosomes of the parent cell) and fertilization and it results a new human that have some similar characteristics from the parents.
Gregor Johann Mendel was born in 1822 and died in 1884 he was a German scientist and was the founder of the new science of genetics. Mendel made and experiment on the pea plant and his result was that the inheritance of certain traits in pea plants follows particular patterns, now referred to as the laws of Mendelian inheritance. Heredity is important because we take our characteristics from our parent that’s why we have similar traits with them for example, eye color, hair type, or skin color. Heredity wouldn’t work without these three important factors, the first factor is called cells and it is the basic structural, functional and biological unit of all known living organisms, inside the cell there is something called a nucleus it contains DNA inside it. The second factor is called DNA and it is the hereditary material in humans and approximately all other organisms. In a person’s body all the cells have the same DNA. The third factor is called genes and it is a unit of heredity which is transferred from a parent to children and is held to determine some characteristic of the young.

Genetics has given us important results with regards to knowing why certain organisms and their expressions are the way they are and how some expressions are suppressed due to those particular expressions being recessive. The reason is because genetics is the study of genes and the effects of it to organisms.
No one knew how heredity (passing traits) worked until Gregor Mendel, an Austrian monk, crossbred pea plants in his monastery kitchen garden in 1865. In 1869, gene-hunters found rod-like shape in the nucleus of cells that turned red when dye was added. They named this “Chromosome”, from a Greek word, chroma for color. They also went deeper into the cell and discovered a wispy microscopic thread within the chromosomes, which they named DNA. There were several scientists who did not know about Mendel’s breakthrough at the time, but then in 1900, they rediscovered his experiment and old journal copies.
Inheritance, by Sharon Moalem, is a nonfiction novel that elaborates on what makes us who we are and why. Moalem states that even before we are born, our genes set up determines our lives. Our genes are adaptable sequences that can be altered by instances of trauma, simple dietary change, or just a small indiscretion. Heredity was a concept that little was known about before the 20th century. In that era, there were two main concepts that most followed about heredity. First, that heredity occurred within a species, and second, that traits were given directly from parents to offspring. These ideas led people to believe that inheritance was the result of a blend of traits within a fixed, unchanging species. Conclusion: Inheritance is the means by which certain traits are passed down from one generation to the next. By applying Mendel’s law of dominance it is possible to choose genetic traits in parents to produce offspring that carries the desired trait. It is also beneficial in determining the likelihood of passing down genetic diseases from one generation to the next. However environmental factors and mutations can increase or decrease the probability of inheriting particular genes.

When a male cell meets with female reproductive cell, they start a process for a new life in a woman’s womb. The sperm has a different copy of the gene and an egg the same and so when they meet, two copies of genes are present and through them a new life begins and it will comprise both genes.
