Almost a century ago, schools begin to instate uniforms into their dress code. This moment in time started a long debate that still continues today. The question that has been debated is whether or not schools should have uniforms. Many believe that having uniforms takes away a person’s first amendment while others believe that uniforms help stop bullying. There are endless amounts of arguments to disapprove of uniforms: There is evidence that uniforms increase violent attacks, school uniforms emphasize the socio-economic divisions that they are trying to get rid of and that uniforms have a damaging effect on a student 's self-image. With uniforms, there is little focus on what the person is wearing and more focus on the background of the person, or how poor the person is. Schools should be creating an environment that allows everyone to be welcome with little to no discrimination. Although this goal could be hard, because there are people out there that will bully no matter what, schools aren’t helping at all when they introduce uniforms. Most of the public schools with uniform policies are in poor neighborhoods, which emphasizes the distinctions that uniforms were supposed to eliminate. Then, there are many arguments for uniforms: School uniforms prevent gang colors and insignia, school uniforms keep the students involved in their education instead of their clothes, and that school uniforms reduce bullying. There seems to be many more valid arguments against uniforms than for uniforms. There isn’t really any advantage for uniforms, but there are many disadvantages of having uniforms. George Carlin once said, “Don 't these schools do enough damage make all these kids think alike, now they have to make them look alike too? It 's not a new idea, either.
