Every day when you wake up in the morning, you dress according to what activates you have planned for that day. Whether you’re preparing for a soccer game, or going to lunch with your mother, you dress in a way that fits the situation. You wouldn’t wear a baseball cap and knee pads to attend church on Sunday, would you? The way we dress corresponds with the season, our cultural views, and overall society. It is also categorized as feminine, masculine, or androgynous, meaning a combination of both, better known as unisex.
A very popular way to dress is in uniform, for example suit and tie, or steel toe boots and a hard hat. Uniforms has also become more useful in a school setting, and having a dress code could possibly raise school grades.
There is also a variety of styles to choose from when wearing uniforms, such as skirts, vests, fleece sweaters, button down blouse, polo shirt, and khaki pant. A more sophisticated and clean look. Uniforms prepare young students for the workforce, dressing in a certain way each day becomes more normal for them. Reaching certain expectations teaches students that conformity is most important (Scott, Key, Ph.D., Fresno Pacific University, newspaper article by Steffen, Wayne). Key disagrees with school dress code because students are not allowed to express themselves. Adapting to certain environments is not as important as conformity. It also does not emphasize on flexibility or differences in a work related situation. I spoke with a friend of mine that told me about her experience of wearing school uniforms, and how it did not make any changes to her grade. She concluded with an emotional approach, stating, “Dressing in uniform help in other ways, it stops bullying, if everyone is dressed identical it would leave no room for picking on certain individuals.” Hearing her point of view of the situation was almost the same as my point of view but was still very useful. A study at Youngstown University, found less suspension, and improved attendance rates. This study did not necessarily help with academic performance, it was really correlation (Greenwood, Beth). Another study reported in 2009, at the
It is a great idea for schools to implement a policy on school uniforms because statistics show that students who wear uniforms make better grades. Additionally, male students are not distracted by what female students are (or aren't) wearing. Moreover, students feel a sense of fairness with one another as they are all wearing the same things. When students are at one with one another, their confidence soars, which leads to better academic performance. Student uniforms help reduce the amount of bullying, and students who would normally be bullied now have a much better disposition while at school.
One of the most controversial topics revolving around schooling is the weather students should or should not wear uniforms to improve academic and social behavior. Many sources say that school uniforms improve discipline, attendance, lower criminal activity, and increase academic achievement in students; Furthermore, this is due to less distraction and conforming to the idea that uniforms makes you smarter. This false ideology that is expected from school uniforms has not been proven in any way to work and is more of a waste of the tax-payers money than an improvement. There are more outlying factors that contribute to success or failure than just uniforms and pro-advocates do not get this big picture. The most outspoken reasons why to use
said to not let kids show individuality because all the students are wearing the same thing. They can’t wear jeans and a tee- shirt, or sweatpants to be lazy.It is also said that students will find other ways to express themsleves. This could be in the form of tattooing, piercings, or crazy died hair. The way children decide to express themsleves may be more disracting than uniforms. Some kids may be already nervous about going to school and talking to new people, uniforms may lessen students comfort level even more(pros and cons of uniforms).Dress codes are horrible and uniforms are boring. Kids should be creative with what they wear, and they can't do that with a uniform.
School uniforms reduce the stress children feel when trying to fit in with their peers. Without them, some children may be alienated because their economic background reflects the clothes they wear. Children tend to break off into “cliques” and uniforms could possibly help unite students. Finding creative ways to express their individuality through other outlets other than fashion can help children forge friendships based on their common interests.
At the beginning of the 20th century almost no parent or faculty had any concerns with how students dressed to attend school. Nowadays, though, this is a giant concern among students, parents, and school board officials. Many arguments have been made over the matter saying uniforms should be required and enforced in schools. But, uniforms should not be required as they ultimately eliminate freedom of expression, promote conformity over individuality, may have a detrimental effect on students self image, emphasize the socioeconomic divisions they are supposed to eliminate, and lastly, school uniforms in public schools undermine the promise of a free education by adding an extra expense for families.
Is her midriff showing? Are her shorts to short? Is her bra visible? Do these shoes look right with her outfit? These are all conflicts that could be avoided with school uniforms. School uniforms are special clothes worn by students from a particular school. They typically include bottoms in neutral colors like khaki, black, or even dark green, and tops that are either neutral or in the school colors. Sometimes the uniforms will include a special striped tie in the school colors for both girls and boys. The girls may also have the option to wear pants, skirts, or dresses. Students may or may not be required to wear specific shoes. Historically private schools mainly required uniforms which began in the sixteenth century in England. A statement
Uniforms are to help students to focus and do better in school and outside of school. School outfits are one of several factors that influence learning. It allows students to look more formal in their personality and not how they dress. Students are allowed to determine what is expected at school and the freedom they have outside of school. It also helps learners to be more disciplined in their education and keep them from distractions such as clothe design competition.
School Uniforms are a logical choice for the public school venue. Uniforms prevent students from a lower income background to be singled out for poorly made or cheap clothing, prevents use of gang colors, allows for certain safety measures, and allows teachers to form impressions of students based on actions and work rather than dress code choices.
Students are distracted by the variety of clothing they choose to wear it takes away from them gaining inner knowledge. Students choose to wear fancy, strange, or bright colorful clothes. Students become more interested in paying attention to what other students are wearing and what they have instead of focusing on the subject they are being taught in class. Students should be focusing on gaining new knowledge and skills. Wearing uniforms would teach students how to focus on their personalities, inner beauty, rather than their
Worrying more about others, rather than themselves, students pay more attention to the appearance of their peers instead of their academics. To begin, if school uniforms became apart of the school policy, students’ academics would improve phenomenally. Hanley noted that “The reason for the policy [was] to further improve ascending test scores and provide a safe, comfortable learning environment” (A1+). Clearly, school administrators wanted to improve test scores, and they figured if students dressed the same, then they would have no other choice but to focus on their school work. If the students can concentrate on their school work, then they will have high self- esteem. Furthermore, Valdez believes that school uniforms, positively, will change student academics: “… [they] decrease self consciousness and increase self esteem...” (14). Reasonable and realistic, students who feel better about themselves will succeed in school rather than those who have poor self-esteem. Not only do school uniforms encourage students to have a better attitude about themselves, but they also change the environment in which students learn....
For a while, dress codes have been implemented in private and parochial schools across the county. It wasn't until more recent that the issue was brought to discussion about a dress code in public schools. Uniforms serve a purpose to the schools that are adapting the change in attire. The uniform dress code has helped make private and parochial schools more prestigious for their organization and the results of it. Uniforms would be beneficial to the public school system because a lot of what the public school system is known for would be stopped because of the newly executed dress code.
School uniforms should be enforced. The school uniform statistics for the Department of Education states that 23% of schools in the country have already enforced uniforms (School Uniform Statistics). School uniforms cause a debate every day on whether they should be forced in schools around the country or not. Schools around the U.S. have already started enforcing uniforms. Uniforms bring a lot of benefits to the communities around the schools that are effected by the uniforms. The benefits uniforms bring are that the students have a better educational environment. Everyone wants their families to go to a school with a great learning environment. The uniforms also save the families that have kids in school money. If uniforms are continued to be enforced, families will save money, parents’ lives will become easier, and it will better the education of students everywhere.
36% of parents agreed to this question, and 0% of teachers agreed. Teachers believe that uniforms help improve student’s punctuality and that it could also help improve professionalism and helps enhance a student’s image. They also believe that it could help their maturity level as they
With uniforms, it may restrict the desire for students to dress themselves to impress or stand out. Wearing something they are comfortable with and what they love may increase their confidence level and not curb their creativity. Sometimes when students had to obey the rules and regulations, they might feel locked up inside as they cannot really express themselves. This case can lead to several discipline cases as a student can act aggressively since they think the need to wear uniforms will cut off their
All individuals struggle with discovering who they are and who they may want to be in the future. School environment, either negatively or positively, impacts the result of this greatly. Uniforms in the learning environment have become a highly debated subject all across the country. Although some individuals believe school uniforms have a positive affect, those people should understand the negatives because uniforms promote appearance over character, lower student’s self-esteem, and conflict with the right of expression.
