1) Name one of the ten emerging practices for school counselors and give an example of how you would implement it into your school.
One of the emerging practices for school counselors is advocating for students with special needs. When implementing this in my school I would first make sure that I was knowledgeable about working with children with special needs. To best advocate for students I need to be aware of tools that are available to help students with special needs such as 504 plans and IEPS. I would also make sure that I educated myself on laws and policies pertaining to students with special needs. Students are supposed to feel safe at school and we need to know how to advocate for students properly when this is not that case. There needs to be a zero tolerance anti bullying policy in place at the school. There are many anti bullying programs and one of these needs to be in place at the school. All school staff need to know how to properly intervene when they see a student being bullied or harmed. This ultimately means that the school needs to have a district wide prevention plan that is regularly implemented. Also, they need to have an intervention plan so they are prepared to intervene in certain circumstances.
4. Should the principal’s office be the only remediation for the bully?
I do not believe that the “principals office” should be the only remediation for the bully. I believe that it would be important that I talk with this child and spend time working with this child about bullying. It may be necessary to do individual counseling with the bully. I believe follow up would be important with this situation because you cant just assume there will not be any other concerns regarding bullying.
5. What systemic advocacy approaches should you take if you discover that multiple students are being bullied through-out the school and there is no “bully-proofing” program being offered in the
