The National School Climate Center defines school climate as the "quality and character of school life" and identifies four major aspects: safety, teaching and learning, relationships, and environment (National School Climate Center, 2012). Any organization that serves people must foster an environment in which the workers, and the people it services, collectively feel a certain pride in belonging to that institution. In order to get maximum efficiency and productivity out of teachers and students, school morale must be at a significant level. Some of these facets include working conditions, safety and sense of belonging, and respected camaraderie amongst staff, students and parents. “A growing number of reports, studies and legislation emphasize the importance of positive school climate in reducing achievement inequities, enhancing healthy development and promoting the skills, knowledge and dispositions that provide the foundation for 21st century school — and life — success” (School Climate Change, 2012). Thus, by increasing community involvement through implementing a variety of school events, one can boost school climate and improve overall school morale. Consequently, increasing school morale should then lend to an increase in student achievement. Positive school climate needs to be actively created and sustained by members of the student, parent and school personnel groups in school, and supported by the community at large. This can be done in a variety of ways. By including student families and the community in school events, it is possible to create a climate that is positive and ensures success. According to Crescerance, a web-based educational research company, numerous studies show that engaging families in their children’s education increases student success and decreases dropout rates. Their findings state that research also shows that community engagement is essential for student achievement as well as building and sustaining school improvement and creating school cultures that support all students. “When schools, parents, families, and communities work together to support learning, students tend to earn higher grades, attend school more regularly, stay in school longer, and enroll in higher level programs.” (Van Roeckel, 2008, p. 1) Deer Valley High School in Glendale, AZ is the first high school built in the Deer Valley Unified Scholl District, and with a population around 1800 students, the high school is one of the bigger schools in the state. It has a tradition of family on its’ campus, where there are still teachers teaching that were there when the school opened in 1980. A number of former students have become new teachers on campus and just about all the teachers’ children have attended and graduated from the campus. With a school like ours, there are many connections to the community around it and it is demonstrated by the programs that bring in parent and community to help with the development of our students. There are numerous booster clubs run on our campus to help support student achievement on the sports fields, a school to work programs to teach the students necessary skills in different areas of either nursing, sports medicine classes, and in the culinary arts classrooms, and funding to our school to help ensure all students graduate on time. There are many programs on our campus, but I will discuss four of the programs: baseball booster club, C2G program, “school-to-work”, and the special education program sponsored by Arrowhead Hospital. These programs are designed to improve the relationships between the campus and the people in the community, and give all students on campus every opportunity to succeed in their future.
In looking through the lenses of school culture and school climate, how can high expectations for learning growth by all students be achieved? Research shows us that in order for leaders to shape a new culture of high expectations for all learners, they should start with changing the climate (Gruenert, 2008).
The job of a teacher is never easy but we have seen how cooperative discipline and enabling students to feel capable, connected and contributing can improve classroom management and maybe even our own moods. If we create an environment of mutual respect and give our students legitimate power of voice and choice in the classroom we will see positive results in improved student behavior and student achievement. Because when our students believe that they can succeed, they will.

School spirit is crucial for the true high school experience to thrive. Schools put on activities that are interactive and fun for their students in hopes that students school spirit will increase. Bonneville High School’s student council believes that by providing numerous activities they will be able to create a stronger sense of school spirit, which will build and unify their school, and cause everyone to feel like they belong to something, as well as aid student performance in academics. By unifying the school with one common goal or purpose, school spirit dramatically increases.

Positive Climate: Today’s observation showed that there are very few indications that the teacher and students in this classroom enjoy a warm and supportive relationship with one another. Although people think it does not matter whether the school has a positive or negative climate that is not the case, kids need the positive climate to learn at school.
