Scholarships Should be Increased due to the Foreclosure Crisis

Due to the economic crisis facing America the standards for getting a scholarship to a University should be lowered, as should the standards to keep them. Many aspiring students rely on scholarships to afford their college education but due to the outrageous standards that must be upheld to receive and keep one them, students are having a hard time. In a recent poll done at the University of Michigan-Dearborn 21 out of the 54 students have had a scholarship during their college career but only 12 out of the 54 currently hold scholarships. (Poll) Statistics should not be that low with the amount of students attending the University of Michigan-Dearborn. The standard GPA that a student must uphold in order to maintain a scholarship is about a 3.25. This means a class that has three projects or tests that create an overall grade can ruin your GPA in such a way that your scholarship will be lost. If a new student, either a transfer from a Community College or a freshman, comes to the University and does not know what to expect, does poorly on one exam say a C- or a 72% and the next test they show great improvement and receive a 92%, their overall grade will then be a 82%. In this situation this person would lose their scholarship even though a great amount of improvement was shown. With such high standards the Universities are setting students up to fail. Students in the current economic status have a lot riding on education. The amount of education a student receives directly relates to the amount of money they will earn in a job.
