Schizophrenia
There are many types of psychotic disorders. Some are worse than others and not everyone suffers the same from all of these. The way someone deals with the disorder depends on their environment mostly and the help they get. Some disorders can be painful, others scary and even threatening not only to the patient's life but also to the ones surrounding them. We never really pay enough attention to mental disorders, we have no idea how intense some are and how bad people suffer from them.
First of all, Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that makes it difficult to tell the difference between real and unreal experiences, think logically, have normal emotional responses and behave normal in social responses. Schizophrenia is believed to have always been with men since the beginning. Although Schizophrenia barely became a word about 100 years ago. The disease was identified as a discrete mental disease in 1887 by a doctor. They have found notes about the disease in the book of hearts which traces back to when Egypt was ruled by the Pharaoh. They believed it had to do something with the heart, poison or demons.
In the early years, they treated mental retardation, physical deformities or mental disorders all the same. They believed these were caused by evil spirits that they entered the body so they would drill holes into the skull so the “demons” would leave the body or they would make the person listen to a certain kind of music. They saw Schizophrenia as something shameful and if a family had someone who suffered from the disease it was because they were "sinning" and God was punishing them. People with schizophrenia would not get the help they needed but were rather stigmatized. Later, Krapelin was the one that s...

...helter, prison cell, or a group home. Fortunately, there has been cases where people gradually recover and live a normal life. According to the America's Mental Health Channel(2014), "between 46 and 68 percent of patients either fully recovered or had no symptoms of metal illness." (American Mental Health Channel [AMHC], March 2014). Schizophrenia is definitely not something easy to live or deal with, it is a field that still needs a lot research and studies to be done to find a legitimate cure.

According to the DSM-IV, schizophrenia is classified under the section of “Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders”. Schizophrenia is one of the most serious major chronic brain disorders in the field of mental health; it is a neurological disorder that affects the cognitive functions of the human brain. People living with this incapacitating illness can experience multiple symptoms that will cause extreme strain in their own and their families and friends life. The individual can lose reality, unable to work, have delusions and hallucinations, may have disorganized speech and thought processes, will withdraw from people and activities, they may become suspicious and paranoid, may behave inappropriately in every day social situations. They may neglect personal hygiene and dress improperly, use excessive make-up; every day life is becoming chaotic for everyone involved.
R. D. Laing has stated, “Schizophrenia cannot be understood without understanding despair” (“Schizophrenia Quotes” 1). In his statement, he reveals a side of schizophrenia that is more than a mental disorder, he shows how vulnerable and painful the disorder can be for those who are diagnosed. Patients who have been diagnosed with such a challenging obstacle, may often feel a sense of despair in an attempt to conquer schizophrenia and its symptoms. Medication for the mental disorder has advanced, so that those affected can manage and control the symptoms that come along with schizophrenia to live a healthy, fulfilling life.
In 1899 Thorstein Veblen wrote The Theory of the Leisure Class: An Economic Study of Institutions. In this work, Veblen presented critical thinking that pertains to people’s habits and their related social norms. He explores the way certain people disregard the divisions that exist within the social system, while subsequently emulating certain aspects of the leisure class in an effort to present an image of higher social status. He also presented the theory of conspicuous consumption, which refers to an instance when a person can fulfill their needs by purchasing a product at a lower cost that is equal in quality and function to its more expensive counterpart; however, said person chooses to buy the more expensive product, by doing so, they are attempting to present an image of a higher social status. The almost 110 year cycle between 1899 and 2010 reveals few differences in buying behaviors, other than the differing selection of luxury goods to indulge, or over-indulge in.
“Schizophrenia is Greek and comes from the words ‘split’ (skhizein) and ‘mind’ (phren) which was introduced by Eugen Bleuler. Schizophrenia is a devastating psychotic disorder that may involve characteristic disturbances in thinking (delusions), perception (hallucinations), speech, emotions, and behavior” (Barlow and Durand, page G-17, 470). It is sometimes categorized as prophets, witches, and devils (Kaplan and Sadock, page 1432). “Schizophrenia is a serious and lifelong mental disorder that affects one percent of the population worldwide. The onset is occurs mainly in adolescence or early adulthood” (Minzengberg and Yoon, Chapter 10). Though it mainly occurs in adolescence and early adulthood, it is also common in late adulthood.
Schizophrenia is a psychiatric disorder which causes people with this disorder to misinterpret reality. It is one of the top ten causes of long-term disability. Schizophrenia patients may hear voices that may not be there, they will believe that people are out to harm them, reading their minds, and controlling their thoughts. Because they have these feelings a person can become withdrawn and paranoid. The name schizophrenia leads us to believe that the illness causes a person to have a split personality. This was the old way of thinking about the illness, but it is not the case today. Although the causes of schizophrenia are still not determined data suggest that environmental, social, and genetic factors can play a part in developing the illness. People with schizophrenia develop this illness around the ages 16 and 30 years old. The illness does not develop quickly. Onset is gradual and subtle and usually takes places over a course of five years.
What is Schizophrenia? Schizophrenia is brain disorder that makes it hard to see the difference between reality and imagination, have normal emotional responses, and act normal in social situations. Schizophrenia is relatively young, it has only been around for less than 100 years. It was first discovered by Dr. Emile Kraeplin in 1887. He believed it was a mental illness. A few documents take Schizophrenia’s origins back to Egypt during the Pharaoh’s rule around 1550 B.C. People originally thought schizophrenia was simply madness, and usually associated it with madness, even though it is quite different from madness. Symptoms of this disease include Positive symptoms, which are: hallucinations, or things that someone can see, feel, smell, or hear that do not really exist. Many people hear voices inside their heads, see people that are not there, or smell odors no one else smells. Delusions are another symptom, also known as bizarre beliefs, these may include paranoid delusions also, which are delusions that tell the person that others are trying to hurt them. Thought Disorders are a symptom in which the person thinks unusually or dysfunctionally. Movement disorders may be present in schizophrenic people, they may seem like twitches or small, sharp, and sudden movements. Schizophrenia’s “negative symptoms” are harder to recognize. These include the flat affect, in which the persons face doesn’t move and the voice is droning. The lack of pleasure in life is another once, along with the lack of ability to start and sustain activities, and little speech. These symptoms prevent or block the person from living a normal life because they cause social, physical, and emotional, and mental problems. This may lead to psychosis, insanity, or ...
When people think about mental illness they think about people with mental voices or psychopathic killers like Michael Myers from the movie Halloween , but not all mental illnesses or disorders are so not visible or easily distinguished. Psychological disorders can vary from as minor as drinking problems to as severe as depression and anxiety. Though all mental illnesses are severe and harmful in many ways psychiatrist and doctors still are yet to find permanent cures. There is research linked to genes, hormone problems, brain development, and environment that trigger mental disorders but no research yet indicates the true cause.
...d subject. The overall opinion is that yes Veblen, Bourdieu and Baudrillard all do have some flaws but that fact that they can still be applied to today’s society decades and even longer in relation Veblen, even though they may not 100% fit within a modern 21 century culture. The biggest term that has survived and does not seem to be going anywhere is ‘conspicuous consumption as it has long be relevant within communities today. It is also an efficient method in which society can use the term to describe the bias that is apparent when individuals are status seeker with in consumption. Therefore, even though consumption is a broad topic and can link into many other subjects other than sociology it can be understood through the works of Veblen, Bourdieu and Baudrillard. However they are just a stepping stone there are numerous theories out there and more being created.
Schizophrenia was not well known prior to the 19th century. Up until this point, not many accounts of schizophrenic like syndromes were recorded, whereas “reports of irrational, unintelligible, or uncontrolled behavior were common” ("Schizophrenia", n.d.). Schizophrenia is a difficult illness to understand and it took doctors and psychiatrist a long time to classify the illness and to figure out how it presents itself. “The history of schizophrenia is complex and does not lend itself easily to a linear narrative” ("Schizophrenia", n.d.).
Schizophrenia is a lifelong brain disorder that affects thinking, behavior and the way things are experienced. Individuals with the disorder experience a distorted reality and frequently lose contact with reality. Of the main mental illnesses, Schizophrenia is the most disabling.
...ally from two perspectives which are the social influence and individual factors. In order to indentify the fundamental reason, we have a survey to analyze the phenomenon. As a result, we think the social factors such as materialism and post-cultural revolution are the big background which built a microscopic environment, but the main factors are the individual ones especially the pursuit of the high quality and the psychological satisfaction. As the young generation’s conspicuous behavior are heavily rely on others, even the benchmark of overspending should be set differently depends on different situation, but generally the phenomenon of conspicuous behavior could cause the financial burden and the misguided value. We hold the point that the conduct of conspicuous consumption behavior should not be promoted but should be addressed and reduce the negative impact.

For several decades, as if, a typical undergraduate dream has been characterized with few major steps – getting prestigious high education, taking or buying a diploma, and consequently becoming a successful rich careerist with intuitively main goal to consume as much as possible in order to boost one’s utility at highest potential level. In this way of thinking, development of personal individualism and pursue of human values are left behind the curtains. Everything that can be seen on the scene of our being is mass consumerism, which slowly, gradually, but surely is transferring us into a hedonistic consumer society. According to an article in European Journal of Marketing, “A consumer society is defined as one directed largely by the accumulation and consumption of material goods. The term "consumer society" is used in a pejorative sense, coming from the perception that such a society will inevitably be hedonistic. It is the search for instant gratification that we traditionally associate with hedonism….”(41 Issue: 2007). In our way to gain deep pleasure, we are over purchasing items and gadgets which once were thought to be extreme luxuries. Most of the times, we are interested in what kind of IPhone we possess, whether to buy a tablet or a laptop, are we are driving more expensive and fancy car than the others, what is more fashionable – a pair of Armani jeans or a pair of Dolce and Cabaña trousers.
This is a thought-provoking book about the pursuit of material goods. Kasser is not a preacher, but a scientist. He presents his evidence carefully, and concludes that materialism is a game not worth playing even on its own terms of promoting human happiness.
The general idea of materialism is through conspicuous consumption, whereby the satisfaction derived from the product through the reaction of the audience, rather than personal utility use (Flouri, 1999). Materialistic tend to focus on the purchasing of “status goods” that impress other people (Fournier and Richins, 1991).
