Schizophrenia is a psychological disorder which is severe and chronic. It is one of the most complex disabling brain disorder. Schizophrenia is characterized by disturbed form of thought and disturbed content of thought. People suffering from this disorder may think that other people are reading their minds , have control over their thought or may cause any harm to them. Hallucination is one of the indications of schizophrenia which are usually auditory in nature. Schizophrenic patients may hear voices that other can’t. People which such order may talk about things that does not make sense. Sometimes the patient might look perfectly fine until they talk about what’s on their mind. They are often distant physically, socially, emotionally and are taken up by their own thoughts and delusions. People with this disorder may suffer from family and society problems. They also might not able to keep up with a job or take care of themselves; they often get dependent on others. The causes of schizophrenia are remote. There is always more than one cause for this illness. It is a mixture of genetic, environmental and psychological aspects that would have led to this illness. It is not inherited, cannot be passed down to another generation. Even in identical twins if one has this disorder, it’s not necessary the other has it too. Genetic factor can be an imbalance of the neurotransmitter dopamine as it is proven that dopamine is effective in reducing the symptoms when used as drugs. Environmental factor can family issues ,racial discrimination ,loss of job or social isolation. About 1% of the Americans suffer from this illness. As the causes of schizophrenia are not known, treatment focuses on removal of the symptoms of disease. Treatments include antipsychotic medications and various psychosocial treatments. Antipsychotics are dopamine receptor blocks, usually with phenothiazine nucleus. An antipsychotics reduces delusions, hallucinations, disorganized thinking and also calm agitations, improve cognitive skill. There are side effects of antipsychotic drugs, which includes drowsiness, dizziness, blurred vision rapid heartbeat , sensitivity to the sun ,skin rashes. Patients with schizophrenia should be under special care to provide safe and effective treatment. Especially when the symptoms are severe the patient should be hospitalized so he or she can get adequate care. This disorder requires lifelong treatments even after decrease in symptoms.
