Schizophrenics are those crazy people with two personalities who simply can’t control any of their thoughts or actions; they are generally dangerous to society. This was the exact thought I had after watching the two movies The Dark Knight (Nolan, Thomas, & Roven, 2008) and Me, Myself, and Irene (Farrelly et al., 2000). These two movies far depict what schizophrenia actually is, they instil many of the wide known myths of schizophrenia throughout each film. Schizophrenia is a brain disorder which affects how a person perceives the world, their perception is often significantly altered from reality (National Institute of Mental Health, n.d.). These two films make schizophrenics out to have split personalities, with the second personality generally evil. Schizophrenics are thought of as individuals unable to control their actions and often a harm to society. Although people suffering from the disorder are often unable to maintain a normal life they are in no way dangerous to the people. These movies give the wrong idea about how a schizophrenic truly acts. A large majority of the public are afraid of schizophrenics because they are given the idea that they are violent people unable to control their actions. Schizophrenics are already suffering from not being able to live a normal life, it is not fair for media to make them out to be violent people.
