Mendel looks out the window from his old worn down armchair with a melancholy look on his face. “Do you know what today is Sarah?” He whispers to the picture sitting on the coffee table. “It’s the day we came here. The day we came escaped from Germany!” he smiles softly. “It’s time to celebrate.” He gets up and walks out to his garden, which is bursting with colorful fruits and vegetables. He picks out all of Sarah’s favorites. First potatoes, then broccoli, then tomatoes, then some leeks. “Hey Mister! Are those vegetables for sale?” says a young boy running from across the street. “I’ll buy ‘em off of you!” “Get away from me you meshugener! Get away from Sarah's garden!" Mendel shouts as he stomps over toward the boy, waving a rake at him. The boys eyes widen as he turns around and quickly runs away. Mendel grumbles as he stomps into his house. “Nevermind them, Sarah,” he sighs. “That chaya won’t bother us anymore.” Mendel walks over to the kitchen and begins chopping vegetables and boiling water merrily, humming a tune lightly as he puts the vegetables into a pot. After the soup is done cooking, he pours it into two bowls and brings them to his kitchen table, setting one across from him. “I made your favorite, potato leek soup.” He smiles at the chair next to him. He eats silently for a while and then sighs. “I’m sorry that I couldn’t afford to eat out. It’s just so hard to find a job at my age and there’s no way I would sell our vegetables. If you aren’t here, not even the smallest cherry tomato will be sold.” He looks down at his bowl, swirling his soup around with his spoon. “This isn’t worth the argument. Especially not on this wonderful day. Mazel tov, my dear Sarah. We are in a free world now. No more of that schmuc... ... middle of paper ... ...s he could sell his vegetables for a costly price, but whenever someone offers him more, he politely shakes his head and tells them that it’s only 25¢. Once Mendel sees the sun setting, he tells the people that are left to come again tomorrow. “Please, sir, I have all of the things I need. Can you take two more minutes to let me buy them? I was gonna make dinner for me and my husband with these vegetables,” one woman pleads, showing Mendel the vegetables she’s collected. “Alright, I guess I could squeeze in one more purchase..” Mendel says, looking over what the woman picked out. He counts each bundle. “Let’s see what we have. Leeks, potatoes, some broccoli..” he looks up at her. “..that’ll be 75¢ ma’am.” She hands him the coins and quickly runs off. “You see that Sarah?” Mendel says, looking up at the pink and blue sky. “Maybe she has a taste for your soup too.”
