Mendel looks out the window from his old worn down armchair with a melancholy look on his face. “Do you know what today is Sarah?” He whispers to the picture sitting on the coffee table. “It’s the day we came here. The day we came escaped from Germany!” he smiles softly. “It’s time to celebrate.” He gets up and walks out to his garden, which is bursting with colorful fruits and vegetables. He picks out all of Sarah’s favorites. First potatoes, then broccoli, then tomatoes, then some leeks. “Hey Mister! Are those vegetables for sale?” says a young boy running from across the street. “I’ll buy ‘em off of you!” “Get away from me you meshugener! Get away from Sarah's garden!" Mendel shouts as he stomps over toward the boy, waving a rake at him. The boys eyes widen as he turns around and quickly runs away. Mendel grumbles as he stomps into his house. “Nevermind them, Sarah,” he sighs. “That chaya won’t bother us anymore.” Mendel walks over to the kitchen and begins chopping vegetables and boiling water merrily, humming a tune lightly as he puts the vegetables into a pot. After the soup is done cooking, he pours it into two bowls and brings them to his kitchen table, setting one across from him. “I made your favorite, potato leek soup.” He smiles at the chair next to him. He eats silently for a while and then sighs. “I’m sorry that I couldn’t afford to eat out. It’s just so hard to find a job at my age and there’s no way I would sell our vegetables. If you aren’t here, not even the smallest cherry tomato will be sold.” He looks down at his bowl, swirling his soup around with his spoon. “This isn’t worth the argument. Especially not on this wonderful day. Mazel tov, my dear Sarah. We are in a free world now. No more of that schmuc... ... middle of paper ... ...s he could sell his vegetables for a costly price, but whenever someone offers him more, he politely shakes his head and tells them that it’s only 25¢. Once Mendel sees the sun setting, he tells the people that are left to come again tomorrow. “Please, sir, I have all of the things I need. Can you take two more minutes to let me buy them? I was gonna make dinner for me and my husband with these vegetables,” one woman pleads, showing Mendel the vegetables she’s collected. “Alright, I guess I could squeeze in one more purchase..” Mendel says, looking over what the woman picked out. He counts each bundle. “Let’s see what we have. Leeks, potatoes, some broccoli..” he looks up at her. “..that’ll be 75¢ ma’am.” She hands him the coins and quickly runs off. “You see that Sarah?” Mendel says, looking up at the pink and blue sky. “Maybe she has a taste for your soup too.”
The movie Three Sovereigns for Sarah was about the Salem Witch Trials and what happen during it. The Salem Witch trials were a series of hearings and prosecution of people who were accused of witchcraft. I'm going to be talking about the religion, superstition, the victims, the afflicted girls, and some of the executions. The trials were not right what so ever but was a very important part of history.
In the novel Missing Sarah by Maggie deVries she writes and illustrates a sad tribute to the memory of her sister, Sarah. The author Maggie deVries makes a clear connection between Sarah's adoption by her family and Sarah's incredibly sad life. Adoption of children from another background, heritage and race into white families sometimes doesn't go well, despite the best efforts of the family. Sarah deVries was one of at least 21 women who could only be identified by DNA found on a pig farm in Port Coquitlam, BC. The women were all sex workers or prostitutes who were killed, and the cause of their vanishing was not investigated promptly possibly because they were engaged in selling sex to survive. Even the choice of whether to refer to these women as 'prostitutes' or 'sex
...ar of a military strike, he decided to blockade Cuba. Lucky enough, Khrushchev sent two telegrams: in the first one he offered to dismantle the nuclear sites if America would agree not to invade Cuba and in the second one he demanded the American sites in turkey to be dismantled. On the contrast, an American U2 plane was shot down in turkey at this time, but J.F. Kennedy decided to ignore the incident following the turn of events at that time. Peace was insinuated when finally President Kennedy publicly agreed not to invade Cuba and proceeded to dismantle the sites in Turkey. Though both leaders had a crisis they agreed to set up a telephone hotline to talk over the issue and in 1963 they agreed to sign a treaty that banned the testing and usage of nuclear weapons. The Cuban crisis ended up very significant as from then on the cold war started becoming insignificant.
Thomas stared down at his stomach. It roared as loud as a lion, after three days of unsuccessful hunting. He wasn’t sure if it was due to the smell of eggs and bacon drifting up to his nostrils from the kitchen, or the thought of the mouthwatering caramel apples and hot apple dumplings that would be sold at the festival. Regardless, he was hungry, and knew that he would be the first one at the kitchen table when h...
... I had never even seen most of the food displayed, I eagerly and respectfully tried each dish. After everyone in the room sat down at the massive table, the Rabbi picked up a glass of wine and made a prayer over it. Then, Rabbi Kanelsky passed around pieces of Challah bread to the entire table. This lunch festival was yet another ceremony dedicated to one of the member’s deceased relative. At the conclusion, the Rabbi said another prayer out loud for the deceased and the relative expressed his gratitude to everyone.
Jonathan Smith goes to extreme measures to explain his new plan to raise the economic wellbeing of his country. He explains what age is too young and what age is too old, in order to eat the tenants children when they are at their prime juiciness. He also gives a list of suggestions on how to cook them, ?A young healthy child well nursed, is, at a year old, a most delicious nourishing and wholesome food, whether stewed, roasted, baked, or boiled, and I make no doubt that it will equally serve in a fricassee, or a ragout.? All of this talk about eating children comes as a surprise because previous to this disturbing suggestion, Swift is ironically discussing the plight of starving beggars in Ireland. The reader is unprepared for the solution that he suggests.
Sarah Polley’s film Stories We Tell is as much about how we interpret images – what we take as “true” – as it is about how we remember. Through a close analysis of the film discuss what you think the film sets out to do and how it achieves these aims. In answering this question you might also want to look at reviews of the film.
Then she saw a greasy china plate that had bread crumbs, cheese and sausage. The pungent of cheese made her stomach grumble. The man was very rude and insulted her because she couldn’t read. Then Frances headed home and on her way, she bumped into a girl with a nice, green, winter coat. She imagined her Ma in that coat, twirling around with a smile on her face. The girl’s mother said a rather offensive sentence about Frances and walked away with her daughter.

Fifty years ago, the Cuban Missile Crisis brought the not just the U.S but the world to the brink of nuclear warfare. In October 1962, a U.S. spy plane caught the Soviet Union trying to sneak nuclear missiles into Cuba, 90 miles off the U.S coast.Kennedy determined at that action could not stand. The crisis is generally considered as the moment in which the Cold War came closest to turning into a nuclear conflict. For fourteen days during October 1962, the world held its breath as John F Kennedy and Nikita Khrushchev, the leader of the Soviet Union at the time, tried to reach an agreement and avoid nuclear war.
Food has been a great part of how he has grown up. He was always interested in how food was prepared. He wanted to learn, even if his mother didn’t want him to be there. “I would enter the kitchen quietly and stand behind her, my chin lodging upon the point of the hip. Peering through...
In order to understand where the Cuban Missile Crisis originated from, it is important to examine the events leading up to it. In 1961 the Soviet Union was under rule of Nikita Khrushchev. At the time, the United States was in the middle of a political transition with the election of John F. Kennedy, more commonly referred to as JFK ("John F. Kennedy"). With Khrushchev’s establishment of power spreading out across the country, he gained knowledge of the U.S. planting nuclear weapons in Turkey facing the Soviet Union only 300 miles away (History.com).
In Gary Soto’s “Oranges,” the speaker is describing the first time he walks with a girl. He is at the tender age of twelve and this simple act of innocence takes place on a cold, grey day in December. As the two walk together, they stop in a drugstore and, being the typical boy, the speaker “asked what she wanted” (27). When she shows him the chocolate and he realizes that he cannot afford it, he then does a quick barter with the shop lady and exchanges his lone nickel and one of his oranges for the chocolate. The...
I want to cancel my birthday celebration at nan’s house. I’ve decided that I want to help collect food for the Manna Food Center.” The room suddenly had a tense and awkward atmosphere. It was so silent that you could hear a pin drop. “Hear me out, okay? Don't get mad, please. I just wanted to help because I wanted to have a special birthday where I help out and have something to be proud of! Please don't be mad!” I was panicking. I prepared for the worse, but nothing could have prepared me for this. Out of nowhere, everyone burst out laughing. Timothy, my brother even started giggling. I was so lost and confused. “What’s so
