This article caught my attention because this is a topic that is hardly ever talked about. Sandra Seay, an Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership at East Carolina University, hit the nail on the head when she expressed that, “Adult students engaged in graduate study through evening programs have made a conscious decision to succeed in their career goals”(Seay). She writes about her experience as a professor, who work with adult learners from all types of stressful jobs. She shares techniques and strategies to help her adult learners, transition from the stressors of their work day into engaged learners. I can appreciate Seay’s attitude toward adult learners. These techniques help a lot of adult learners. She lets her students know that she is aware of their work responsibilities, by giving her adult learners some leniency. Adult learners will not be penalized for arriving late to class, or if they have to leave class early because of a work related emergency. They receive15 minute breaks to get something to eat, for those who have not had a chance to eat during the day. “I take two approaches in helping my students detach from their stressors of their workdays, I use a variety of instructional techniques to keep my adult learners alert and focused on class activities” (Seay). She employs energetic guest presenters, to keep her adult learners awake and interested. Small group activities keep the class going and you can find help in your groups. Personally, small group activities are a great idea, because it’s a time to get social and bounce ideas off of everyone, causing a better class environment, and a tight knit social experience. She also has lectures that last no longer than 15 minutes per topic. That is a great way to handle lectures. Some lecturers are too long, making it harder to retain the info.
