Sandberg’s “Lean In” vs. Hook’s “Dig Deep” are two articles that are similar, but they have differences. Sandberg’s main point is that women are over looked for executive job positions, and there is extreme sexism in play, while most job fields are ran by misogynists. She also feels as though women are looked at as second class citizens, and are only worth to either stay at home and cook and clean. She makes a great point by giving a personal example, when she stated that her grandmother had to drop out of school to take care of her family. Hook’s article is opposes Sandberg’s because Hook feel as though the main issue with female equality is racism, poverty, and cultural patriarchy are the main reasons why women are undermined,

Author: Sheryl Sandberg, Published in 2010. Sandberg’s focal point in gender inequality is that women are disrespected because their looked at as servants rather than leaders. On Pg. 658 of They Say/I Say Sandberg states that “She should urge more women to believe in themselves and aspire to lead”, she makes a great point that women need to be encouraged to evolve into leaders. Personally, I know several women that has a high moral, and are working for leader positions in their field. There are more females that are nurses than males in America. Statistically, that makes a great outlook on how well women are doing in some areas. Sandberg also makes it known that “gender stereotypes were reinforced throughout her life and they became self-fulfilling prophesies”. I agree with Sandberg fully because there are many people will say “Women cannot drive” or “Women are only good at being servants, which includes cooking, cleaning, and other daily household chores”. While that is not true at all, women are grouped by a statistic. Simply because women are often skilled at cooking and cleaning, does not mean that is their goal or what they aspire to become. There are a plethora of women who will not cook, clean, or serve men, period. There has been women that arose to great heights. Bell Hook states that the leading issues with gender inequality is: “cultural imperialist, white supremacy, and cultural patriarchy”. Hook makes a strong point that is far beyond valid or legit. Poor women have the most difficult time with succeeding in life. For instance, poor women have issues with paying for bills, education, and finding jobs that will accept them. I am not saying that wealthy women do not have issues with succeeding in life, but if one was to have monetary riches more resources are available. Culture imperialism is the cultural aspects of imperialism, in which is the maintenance of unequal relationships between civilizations favoring the most powerful civilization. Hook is referring to the taking of essence from minorities as in their characteristics. This alone enables women of color to feel powerless. If one was to take all of the riches and cultural benefits of one ethnic group, and in return they use it for another that only creates a greater disparity or difference for others. White supremacy is an ongoing issue that is international. There are groups or cults of people who truly believe that there is a “Supreme Race”. These people are discriminate and epitomize hatred towards others who are not of their origin or ethnic group. If there are cults of people that will negate, discriminate and spread hate towards minorities. Which as well limits or lowers a woman of color
Some men believe women are inferior to the male species; however, that is not the case. Both men and women are both capable of achieving greatness if given half the chance to do so, unfortunately, this means equality. In “From A Vindication of the Rights of Women”, Mary Wollstonecraft dispenses her thoughts on how unfairly women are treated in the 1700s, in addition to expressing her opinion on the issue in her essay. Wollstonecraft stated that “Men and women must be educated, in a great degree, by the opinions and manners of the society they live in.”, this statement is very true, no matter what times you are living in. Women continuously are portrayed as subordinate in comparison to men. This idea eventually created another idea; feminism. Sheryl Sandberg, wrote a book about these feminist concerns, claiming that women are the source of the inequalities. Sandberg believes women need to alter their life in accommodation to equality. However female activist bell hooks writes in response to Sandberg arguing that men created this stereotypical “stay at home” woman. Hooks begins by going further than Sandberg, in reasoning about the unequal gender crisis, with putting both men and women at fault.
She mentions how you should not put off a lot of time just because one’s children are young. Be a good role model for a daughter or even a son, let them know they can do it; they can be successful regardless of their gender. In this book, Sandberg describes non-fictional struggles for a woman in the workplace. She uses real life experiences to portray the image and information she wants to be known. In the majority of early cultures and societies, women have always been considered subservient and inferior to men. Since the first wave of feminism in the 19th century, women began to revolt against those prejudicial social boundaries by branching out of the submissive scope, achieving monumental advances in their roles in civilization. However, gender inequality is still prevalent in developed countries. Women frequently fall victim to gender-based assault and violence, suffer from superficial expectations, and face discriminatory barriers in achieving leadership roles in employment and equal pay. bell hooks closes her essay by saying, “If black men are betraying us through acts of male violence, we save ourselves and the race by resisting.” (123) I believe in what she is saying, but she is one sided. Maybe she is just saying that we, as women, would rather be called just ‘girls’, ‘women’ or even ‘chicka’, but that is every woman, not just the black women. But, did she even think about the girls (black and white) that like to be paraded around like giraffes at a circus? Did she realize that she is just one person, as am I, and she can’t change the world she lived in? The world is cruel and evil and some of the men in it are just as nasty and immoral, but it’s our choice whether to live in the world…or in the circus.

The United States has a lower birth rate because some females are trying to compete for a chance in the workforce. “Companies with three or more women on the Board of Directors average twenty-eight times more money” (Weisul “Women make companies more generous”). Women earn companies more money, but only 24 percent of CEO’s in the United States are women. In the American society, we constantly hear people make sure they say that a chief executive officer, a racecar driver, or an astronaut is female when they are so because that is not deemed as stereotypically standard. Sheryl Sandberg is the, dare I say it, female chief operating officer of Facebook while Mark Zuckerberg is the chief executive officer. Notice that the word “female” sounds much more natural in front of an executive position, but you would typically not add male in front of an executive position because it is just implied. The fact that most of America and the world makes this distinction shows that there are too few women leaders. In Sheryl Sandberg’s book “Lean In,” she explains why that is and what can be done to change that by discussing women, work, and the will to lead.
In Sheryl Sandberg’s essay “Lean In: What You Do If You Weren’t Afraid?”, she talks about how women are afraid to strive for leadership that men pursue for. She mentions how women are afraid to be leaders even though they outperform men academically in their degrees. Women are discouraged to enroll in leadership in the workforce because “they are less valued in the workplace” and “overwhelmingly stocked with men”(Sandberg 646). More importantly, Sandberg points out that the reason women don’t seek for high positioned jobs is that they aren’t “ambitious” as much as men. Gender inequality has been a disadvantage for women in society for many centuries. Women have always had a disadvantage in society, even though there's been many years of time for improvement. Women in the time of Shakespeare, were treated like possessions and how a man treated a women and how he controlled his women, was how masculine he was. Women in some work places get paid less than men do. In 2011, for every $1.00 a male worker earned, a women worker earns 74 cents. In today's society, people who are called Feminists, stand up for the rights of women and the issue of women being treated as equals compared to men. Gender order according to our text is labeled as “hierarchal” (2008), stating that “Men dominate women in terms of wealth, power, and social position, but not all men dominate all women” (2008). While this may be true, it is creating a divide between the two genders. This divide is apparent by looking at the pay scales between men and women, and even how the genders are looked at in terms of jobs or college admissions. Looking at today’s society however, women are slowly rising to compete with their male counterparts, in many ways, from education, government, and even television, for example Oprah Winfrey.
Bell hooks covers an abundance of issues through different class, race, gender and nation. In her article ‘Feminism A Movement to End Sexist Oppression’ she begins by discussing the oppression of mainly black women who are in a lower class. Hooks discusses if men become associated with the feminist movement it would mainly affect the upper class and middle aged white women while just scratching the surface for working-class and poor women. In the recent article ‘Representing Whiteness in the Black Imagination’ bell hooks discusses the oppression about the racism faced by black people. I find it that this article is more non-intersectional because we are only talking about black people in general. We can only assume that hooks is discussing racism faced by poor black people because they were servants. Further into the article however hooks does focus on African Americans and we read upon what their impression of the white man could be. Hook also looks as students and how racism occurred in one of her class discussions. Finally, we look at the view of two black women and how they faced racism. The first woman was Njeri from ‘Every Good-Bye Ain’t Gone and how her grandfather was run over by 2 white guys. The second woman was Sethe from ‘Beloved’ by Morrision and how she killed her young because she didn’t want them to grow up in a world of terror. I found it that hooks did not say specifically who she is talking about like in her article ‘Feminism A Movement to End Sexist Oppression’ but is targeting the topic of racism all
From the start of the introduction Sandberg indicates her stance, a key factor to a narrative, by saying “It has been more than two decades since I entered the workforce, and so much is still the same. It is time for us to face the fact that our revolution has stalled. The promise of equality is not the same as true equality”(Sandberg, 7). She writes about equality in hopes that one day we will live in an equal world. The only way to achieve this goal is by affecting the identities of today’s women. Some women may be persuaded to change their identities through reason, such as why it’s important for women to “lean in”. Sandberg elaborates her reasoning by saying “I believe that if more women lean in, we can change the power structure of our world and expand opportunities for all”(Sandberg, 171). Hook argues that Sandberg neglects to acknowledge the influence women have on society, but rather works to change it: “The vast majority of men in our society, irrespective of a race, embrace patriarchal values; they do not embrace a vision or practice of gender equality either at work or in the domestic household” (668). In short, we are not equal if one gender controls the other. Sandberg illustrates and describes her trickle-down theory showing women being at the top of corporate ladders would make a positive impact in the workforce. In the workplace, women do not receive the same benefits that men do. Some women do the same job, for the same amount of hours, and still do not receive the same pay for their work. Is there a specific reason behind this? No, it is just one of the many inequalities that goes on on the job. As pointed out in the essay by Susan Faludi, Blame it on Feminism, women earn less. The average women’s paycheck is twenty percent less than their male counterparts. Men with only high school education’s make more than some women who have graduated college. Most women are still working the traditional “female” jobs: secretaries, teachers, and nurses for example. Construction work, engineering, and doctor’s, are considered “out of our reach” and men’s jobs. Women are very capable of doing these jobs, but most times when applying for a “man’s job” are not taken seriously. American women are more likely not to receive health insurance and twice as likely not to draw pension then American men. They face the biggest gender-biased pay gap in the world.
Women are usually targeted because they are seen as the inferior gender in society. They are often displayed as sexual objects in the media, such as in porn and video games. Because of the way women are portrayed in society, they do not have the same opportunities as men. Many people may think that sexism is not an important issue anymore because women are making their way to the top. For instance, Mary Berara, the CEO of General Motors says “There are more women in more senior roles than in 1980 when I started. But from my career perspective, I don 't go into a room and take count. I want to be recognized for my contribution and for what I do” (nymag). Women are pushing themselves to work in higher positions, to prove that they have the same ability as men. Although women are becoming more and more powerful, sexism is still a huge issue today. Women may have higher positions, but they are paid less than men. According to a news article, “In 2012, the median earnings of American women working full time year-round were $37,791. American men earned a median income of $49,398. The gender wage gap has hovered at about 77 cents on the dollar since 2007” (huffington).
