This past Sunday was sanctity of life Sunday in America, and this coming Sunday is sanctity of life Sunday on South Africa. With this in mind I thought I would write a bit about what the sanctity of life is. The principle is human life is sacred- Sacred in a different way than everything else. This principle is found in Genesis 9v5b which says, “Surely I will require your lifeblood; from every beast I will require it. And from every man, from every man’s brother I will require the life of man. Whoever sheds man’s blood, By man his blood shall be shed, For in the image of God He made man.” Now somebody is going to say to me, “What? If animals kill a human being God is going hold those animals accountable? How does that work?” and the answer is I have no idea, but the point is clear: If God is angry at animals doing instinctive things, for killing human beings, how much more accountable are human beings for one another’s lives. What God is getting across here is that of all of his creation there is something special about human beings- human life is scared. Anyone who violates it I will be held accountable.
What does ‘Sacred’ mean?
What does that word sacred mean. What does it tell us? And I would suggest that right here in the text you have basically three grounds for saying that God says human life is sacred.
Human life is sacred because if you look carefully its priceless. Why is it priceless? If you see a diamond ring and you ask the man who owns it, “I would like to buy that diamond ring”, what if the man says, “No, that was my wife’s, that’s the ring I gave her when we were engaged. She died tragically some years ago, its priceless to me” now what does he mean. There is no exchange for it. God is saying (here is one of t...

...ou are not accountable you can do whatever you want with it. But if it’s not yours, but it’s in your hands, you are accountable. That’s what we have here, It says, “for your life blood I will demand an accounting. I will demand an accounting for the life of your fellow man” Now this is a frightening thing.
We are saying, human life is sacred in this sense, every human life that comes into your life whether it’s the guy serving you behind a McDonalds window, or a taxi driver, no matter what life comes into your world, you are accountable for it. Every human life is a sacred deposit, how you treat other people God says, “I will hold you accountable for how you treat”. Because human beings are not yours! No human being, not your children, not your parents, not your friends, not your family, no human being is yours to cut up, stack, use and discard as if it is yours.
15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”

nothing and no one can in any way permit the killing of an innocent human being, whether a fetus or an embryo, an infant or an adult, an old person, or one suffering from an incurable disease, or a person who is dying. Moreover, we have no right to ask for this act of killing for ourselves or for those entrusted to our care; nor can any authority legitimately recommend or permit such an action. We are dealing here with a violation of the divine law, an offense against the dignity of the human person, a crime against life, and an attack on humanity.

The human does not abide in honor; he is like the beasts that perish (13). This refrain comes against the background of death. It suggests that in death there is no difference between man and a beast and that the world is not a permanent place to abide in honor.
One of multiple objectives, medicines most important of all should be to allow terminally ill people to decease with as much comfort, control, and dignity as possible. Various individuals feel that it is incorrect for others, irrespective of their health status, to ask their physician to end their lives; while others believe it is their moral right to be able to determine how and when they will pass. When physicians are asked to assist a patient through the process of death, they have multiple accountabilities that come along with that one question. Physician assisted suicide should be a legalized medical practice; therefore, America should start by educating terminal patients about their final options; deciding whether or not to help the patient die; and also, if they do decide to help, providing the lethal dose of medication that will end the patient's life.
From Sacred Scriptures: The book of Genesis addresses the same problem and conflict we face today. It is the tension between the inviolable sacredness of human life on the one hand, and man's responsibility for safeguarding the well-being of the community. The biblical authors regarded life as the gift of the life-giving God himself: "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them." (Gen. 1:23) "Then the Lord formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being." (Gen. 2:7) For one person to deprive another of that gift is an affront to the creator himself.
The magnificence of human life is so transparent because it is sacred seeing that it is an act of creation. Life diverts an inimitable place in creation since it was created in the image of God. The protection of human life is the conclusive value, a support of beliefs and ethics and the basis of all morals and principles. Life should be looked upon with respect to where one is in time, because time moves on. As time moves on, one encounters the problem of which path to follow. In the stages of early life, youth are taught about the choices they should and should not make. So even as a young child, one knows that their actions will be judged and one should be able to tell right from wrong. God has presented humanity with life and throughout life one must realize that life’s actions should be analyzed, understanding of liberation should be expressed, and the better opportunity for the poor should be accentuated.
