The San Jose Museum of Art is nicely decorated and furnished museum with many different types of art. I decided to start out by looking at some of the various paintings. There were many different kinds, including traditional oil paintings on canvas as well as ordinary paper. One that stood out in my mind was “Desert Restaurant” by John Register. It’s a painting of the inside of a diner sitting in the middle of an open desert. The picture gives an eerie sense of isolation. One sculpture that I remember was one by Oliver Jackson, which is untitled. The sculpture appears to be a figure of a human squatting down. The sculpture is made out of Steel, Marble, and Crayon. Besides these, there were many other interesting pieces of art in the Museum including the unique bright chandeliers made of blown glass.
I read an article in an old issue of “Art in America” about the lack of interest many young Americans show toward art in recent years. The article went on to explain how museum attendance was down in most museums compared to 20 years ago. Their main reasoning for this was the basic arguments of the advances in other forms of technology such as Television and computers that draw the attention of young ones away from traditional arts such as museums and live plays. The article went on to say that plays have become more for the highly sophisticated and less for the average person. The average person views a live play as any normal television show and doesn’t recognize the culture aspect attached to it. (Art in America, “Fading Culture” 1991, 12-14)
The San Jose Museum of Art held a lot of interesting types of art, but I think I can understand what the article I read in “Art in America” was saying. Art has not changed much over time. Art takes a higher level of appreciation and educational level to be truly understood and enjoyed.
When I visited the museum, it had a wide variety of exhibits and artworks. It had two temporary Exhibits. The first temporary Exhibit I had the pleasure of seeing was Peter Max’s 50 Years of Cosmic Dreaming, which is on display from June 10th thru September 11th. Max was born in Berlin, but has lived in China, Israel, and finally the United States. Max was a rising star in the 1960s, with a passion for astronomy, sages and spiritual life. His work is strongly “associated with pop art, neo-fauvism, and abstract expressionism” (Peter Max). Max’s artwork contains multiple United States symbols and cultural icons. Symbols included the statue
When you are looking at a painting or sculpture, you are not only looking at a work of art, you are looking at the soul and story of the artist. I was able to really see that when I went to the St. Louis Art Museum. The new sector that was added to the museum, in my opinion, was a fantastic addition to the overall museum. Looking at all the art periods and all the ways that artist conveyed their feelings with their works was a great experience. If someone were to ask me if it was worth coming to the St. Louis Art Museum, I would highly recommend it. This is an outstanding museum, from the building itself to the collections it houses. Going to it always reminds me how fortunate I am to have the Saint Louis Art Museum right here in my own backyard.
As I look at the painting of The Adoration of The Shepherds, two artists, Andrea Mantegna and El Greco, showed it different ways with same subjects. First, the title of the paintings is about Jesus's birth. Andrea mantegna artist had lived from ca 1430 to 1506. He established his reputation when he was 20 years old. This painting is the evident of his highly individual style. He worked it during ca 1451 to 1453. He painted it in horizontal format with 153/4x217/8(40x55.6). He used tempera on a canvas that transferred from a wood. In difference, El Greco(Spain 141-1641) worked it with oil color on canvas by vertical format. The size is 125 5/8x707/8(319x180cm). In Greco's painting, the objects are full on the canvas that big two angels and others are placed on top of the middle place, and the people are placed in triangle position based on the landscape. The landscape is very detail. The people I find it that Holy Maria is standing in the middle and the mountain is placed behind of Maria among the landscape things.
The purpose of paintings is to capture the image of something. Paintings have been around since prehistoric times and span all cultures. Paintings are seen as one image but can convey thousands of different meanings. Before photography, paintings were used to record important events. The Blanton Museum of Art is home to many different types of paintings. The paintings range from different landscapes in America to cowboys to Native Americans. There are five paintings in the Blanton Museum of Art that can convey an image and culture of the American Old West with vivid and detailed images of cowboys, Native Americans, and the landscape represented, which is an important aspect of American culture and the frontier spirit.
years ago the word "theater" possessed a different meaning than it does in today's society. The
The trip to the metropolitan museum was a great trip to learn and to study art. What is art you may ask, well art is an expression you use to show a visual picture. It can be through painting or through sculptures. Some other example of art is music, literature and dancing. For today 's paper we will be talking about art as a sculpture. The two sculptures in this photo are King Sahure and a Nome God and Marble Statue of Dionysos leaning on archaistic female figure (Hope Dionysos). You can find these statues in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. King Sahure and a Nome God is an Egyptian art that was made in 2458-2446 BCE. The artist is unknown. It was during the 5th dynasty and it also belong to the old kingdom. The Marble statue of Dionysos Leaning in the archaistic female figure is a Greco-Roman art. Belonging to the Roman imperial period of the late first century A.D. Augustan or Julio-Claudian period 27 B.C., to 68 AD. It is classified as a stone sculpture and it is made out of marble. The height of the statues is 82 ¾ inches. There is no evidence who was the original artist.

...nes, and television—essentially everywhere. It subconsciously teaches children what is “good” and what is “bad.” Art no longer only reveals the changes in society, but also encompasses the role of a parent—it too shapes the world.
There is a multitude of museums a person could choose to visit in Southern California, each one carrying unique exhibits from different eras and cultures. I chose to visit the Bowers Museum which has numerous exhibits ranging from Pre-Columbian art to more Contemporary and Modern art. California: The Golden Years is one of those exhibits. The exhibit contains the painting called Marinescape by Edgar Payne. The Marinescape painting shows the beauty of California’s coast through the use of impressionistic techniques. These techniques depict the ocean's strong force through light and soft colors, which provide a breathtaking image of the Laguna Beach Coast.
The Polk Museum of Art (PMoA), is a non-profit, private, and nationally accredited art museum based in Lakeland, Florida. This museum specializes in modern, contemporary, Asian, African, European, and American artwork. In addition, the museum also holds a student exhibit, sculptures in the outer garden, and other special exhibits. The museum boasts a variety of diverse artworks that come rom everyday people and life. However, the PMoA is not so big, it only offers a fraction of the artwork for viewing.
I was lucky enough to visit the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam in November of last year. The museum was located in somewhat of a museum park. The Rijks museum and the Stedelijk Museum are located on the same block. A beautiful landscape of ponds and trees are centered around them. The Van Gogh Museum has an audio tour available in all languages via a handheld tour guide. Unfortunately, funds limited me to get the audio tour, but I was able to nonchalantly follow a British couple around most of the five floors. The museum chronologically directes you through a collection of Van Gogh's and his contemporery's works.
As I walked in and looked around, I noticed how big it was and how many people there were. There was not only amazing art, but great views of Los Angeles, which I found really impressive as well. The work of art that caught my eye was Claude Monet’s oil painting Sunrise c. 1873. To its left was The Portail of Rouen Cathedral in Morning Light c. 1894 and to the right was Still Life with Flowers and Fruit c. 1869. The subject of the sea from Monet’s Sunrise I was able to associate it with, Hokouasi’s Thirty Six Views of Mount Fuji c. 1826-1833. The museum was a very fun experience, and finding a piece of art from our readings in class made the experience a lot more rewarding, because I was able to take what I learned in class and apply it outside of
are heavily influenced by theatre and Broadway therefore, people are more aware of live theatre and often attend plays. Cities such as Modesto, Turlock, Stockton, etc. have little knowledge and are less aware of live theatre. As a result, people in such cities prefer entertainment in movie theatres. The entertainment levels differ between live theatre and movies depending on how that particular entertainment is presented and how the audience recognizes it. The main goal of live theatre is to entertain the audience either through comedy, tragedy, romance, and action through the use of costumes, effects, props, and lighting to achieve the highest possible entertainment level for the people in order for them to come watch more theatre and drama. On the other hand, some people prefer movies to be more entertaining due to enhanced sound and edited picture. Movies are mainly offered everywhere meanwhile, live theatre is harder to find especially local. I would advise people to try out and attend live theatre plays and give it a try. It is a great experience for family and friends. I am glad that I took this course and had the chance to explore theatre and drama. I will definitely attend live theatre plays in the future. It is a different form of entertainment compared to movies. Theatre is composed of many emotions and will leave the audience feeling some type of way. In my opinion, theatre is a form of exceptional art. I had different empowering emotions and experience with these three events. Theatre is truly a memorable art of
Pop culture is a reflection of social change, not a cause of social change” (John Podhoretz). It encompasses the advertisements we see on T.V, the clothes we wear, the music we listen too, and it’s the reason Leonardo DiCaprio has not won an Oscar yet. It defines and dictates the desires and fears of the mainstream members of society; and it is so ingrained into our lives that it has become as natural as breathing. Moreover, adults never even bat an eyelash at all the pop culture and advertising that surrounds them since it has become just another part of everyday life. Pop culture is still somewhat seen as entertainment enjoyed by the lower class members of society; but pop culture standards change over time. A notable example of this is the sixteenth century author, William Shakespeare, since his works were considered pop culture, entertainment that could be enjoyed by everyone, but now they are considered literary classics. While pop culture encompasses most aspects of our lives, its influence is most obvious through each generations reaction to media,
For thousands of years, people have been arguing that theatre is a dying art form. Many people think theatre is all just cheesy singing and dancing or just boring old Shakespeare, but there is much more to theatre than those two extremes. Theatre is important to our society because it teaches us more about real life than recorded media. Theatre has been around for thousands of years and began as a religious ceremony that evolved into an art form that teaches about the true essence of life. Theatre can incorporate profound, and provocative, observations of the human condition that can transcend time; lessons found in Greek plays can still be relevant to the modern world. People argue that the very essence of theatre is being snuffed out by modern
