Throughout San Francisco there are countless storm drains and small rivers or creeks that flow directly to San Francisco Bay. Marina Lagoon in San Mateo, Windsurfer Circle at Candlestick Point, and Baker Beach in San Francisco (where Logos Creek flows into the Bay) all received poor grades from Heal The Bay's 2014 Beach Report Card.
When humans litter their garbage can end up in one of these channels that take their garbage straight to the bay. What end up seeing is an accumulation of garbage and plastic in San Francisco Bay. This effect animals in the ocean small and big alike because they end up eating the plastic or getting caught in the plastic. When we are aware as a community to not litter our garbage on the streets or in nature we will see a decrease in garbage in the bay. The next thing we can do is to not be an active community member. Do not just aware of the problem but to participate in the solution to the problem. There are many different organizations that are making big strides in the effort to clean up San Francisco Bay. Some are savethebay.org, (list others here) If you cant get involved on your own time, you can definitely support economic polices that will help to reduce plastic production, consumption and litter surrounding the San Francisco Bay area.
