San Diego State University (SDSU, San Diego State) is an open exploration college in San Diego, California, and is the biggest and most established advanced education organization in San Diego County. Established in 1897 as San Diego Normal School, it is the third-most seasoned college in the 23-part California State University (CSU). SDSU has an understudy collection of more than 35,000 and a graduated class base of more than 280,000.

It was situated on a 17-section of land (6.9 ha) grounds on Park Boulevard in University Heights (now the home office of the San Diego Unified School District). It opened with seven employees and 91 understudies; the educational modules was at first restricted to English, history and mathematics.In 1923, the San Diego Normal School got to be San Diego State Teachers College, "a four-year open establishment controlled by the state Board of Education".

By the 1930s the school had outgrown its unique grounds. In 1931 it moved to its present area on a plateau at what was then the eastern edge of San Diego. In 1935, the school extended its offerings past educator training and got to be San Diego State College.In 1960, San Diego State College turned into a part of the California State Colleges framework, now known as The California State University. At last in 1972 San Diego State College got to be California State University, San Diego, and in 1974 San Diego State University
