On July 26th, 2013, tragedy struck in Toronto, just before 12am. An 18-year old male named Sammy Yatim was shot and killed by a Toronto officer. As shown in the videos from the streetcar, Sammy boarded the car that was heading westbound on Dundas street at approximately 11:45 pm (Rogan,2014). When boarding the streetcar, he headed to the very back. Shortly after, four females boarded and also sat at the back near Sammy. Not long after, he drew out his switchblade knife that was 12cm long and tried to slash a passenger named Bridgette Mcgregor’s throat. Several witnesses were outside and had called 911. Soon after,Police arrived and the driver exited the streetcar (Rogan, 2014). Constable James Forcillo of the Toronto Police Service asked his partner to radio for a taser to subdue him (Wikipedia, 2016). Two other officers, as well as Forcillo shouted at least 6 times, “drop the knife!”. After each remark, Yatim’s response was the same: “you 're fucking pussy” (Rogan, 2014). The officers had also warned him not to “take one step in this direction”. At first as shown on the surveillance videos, Sammy had turned away and stepped back further into the streetcar. Then, he came forward facing Forcillo and took a step toward the exit. Forcillo fired 3 shots, bringing Sammy to the ground, leaving him shaking while clenching the knife. Other officers were still shouting “drop it” (Rogan,2014) and Forcillo fired 6 more shots, just seconds after the initial 3 shots. Happening in today’s society, there have been countless number of citizens being killed by law enforcement. Some situations may not cause for force and others may. This case can be a reference in regards to making sure that the force you use is appropriate for the situation. As for the justice system, it is all about being fair and listening to both sides and issuing out the right punishment if there is any. Many people in today’s time needs to get educated when it comes to the reason behind why law enforcement uses force to handle the situations they have to deal with. Sam R. Watkins was a Confederate soldier from Columbia, Tennessee. At age twenty-one, Watkins joined the First Tennessee Regiment along with one hundred and nineteen other young men and boys. He was one of only seven men to survive every one of its battles. He writes a memoir twenty years after being in the war about his experience as a private. Watkins juxtaposes stories of horror and gruesome death with humorous memories throughout his four years in the war.
At around 3:14 pm. Santa Rosa Police officer Erick Gelhaus and his partner, a trainee, were patrolling Moorland Avenue located just before the outskirts of Santa Rosa. Gelhaus who was sitting in the passenger side of the police vehicle, then spotted an individual (now known to be Andy Lopez) with his back facing towards them walking down the street holding what appeared to be an AK-47 assault rifle (Johnson). The trainee officer then stopped the vehicle just a mere 20 to 30 feet away, allowing for Gelhaus to quickly step out and order Lopez to drop the weapon (Chea). Many community members argue that the trainee officer should have gone out of the police vehicle with Gelhaus if Lopez was indeed a threat to the community. The trainee officer however did not exit the vehicle since “at that point Deputy Gelhaus had already engaged the subject, with the commands and with the weapon. The threat was essentially over” (Johnson). This explains why the trainee officer remained in the police vehicle during the confrontation.
Gail Miller was a 22-year-old nursing assistant living in Saskatoon. She was found in an alley way between 6:45 and 7:30am on January 31st 1969. She had been raped, stabbed twelve times and left for dead. The rape was found to have occurred after she died. The police had little evidence; few clues had been left behind. There had been other attacks in the same area. Authorities tried to suppress the information that linked the Miller rape and murder to the two other assaults.
In the short story called "A & P" by John Updike, our main character Sammy is described as being a checkout clerk at the local grocery store. Sammy quits his job for many reasons. Sammy does not want to be referred as a "sheep", someone that follows, instead he wishes to do things on his own.
The thoughts that ran through Sammy’s head questions all of us of what led him to make the changes of his “on track” adult lifestyle. Now a responsible young adult being 19 years old working a cash register and dealing with “Sheep” [customers] doesn’t quite cut it for him. Checking out groceries for people at the A&P local grocery store for quite some time , he decides to step up and be a hero by quitting his job as a reaction for three girls being expostulated, because of their attire clothing, by his boss Lengel. However, was he becoming a “hero” for three girls or a hero for his own self finally taking the opportunity to speak up for something he has been languishing to do so.
The A&P is narrated by a first person who is Sammy. Sammy is a 19-year old cashier at the A&P that lives near Boston. Sammy is a teenager who seems to work because they told him to and not because he wants to. He describes his point of view of everything and everyone who walks or is in the store, and tells the truth as he sees it.
The death of Tim McLean in 2008 on the Greyhound bus in Winnipeg was an absolute tragedy, the details of course absolutely horrendous. Vince Li, now known as Will Lee Baker, was considered to not be criminally responsible on account of his schizophrenia. There was of course a lot of public drawback at that decision at the time, including the victim's family. Recently Will Baker was granted an absolute discharge, which allows him to effectively become a full member of society again, though he has volunteered himself for inspections to ensure he continues his medication. This has led to quite a bit of controversy as many believe he should be jailed or executed for the death of Tim McLean. McLean's family has been fairly outspoken against the
The Son of Sam, or David Berkowitz as it would eventually be revealed, had his debut on July 29, 1976. It was late at night, and two young women were talking in their car when, to their great surprise, David shot them both, killing one. Since it was the first of the attacks, police assumed it was a random isolated incident (Newton 16). When the killer continued to strike, usually shooting at young women or couples in the middle of the night, the public began to notice a pattern. In an attempt to protect themselves from being the serial killer’s next target, many females “cut their hair, wore hats to hide it, or routinely wore it up” since it appeared that his targets usually were “women with long, brown hair” (Cannon).
One of the most memorable and dramatic scenes of the film, Crash, occurs when Ryan, a personally racist police officer, happens upon an car accident in which a woman is trapped in her overturned vehicle. The lasting impression that this scene leaves is probably the reason that I chose it to reflect on in this paper. Ryan, when taking his daily patrol, notices a line of stopped traffic, and stops to see why they are at a stand still. Up ahead, he sees smoke coming out of the engine of one car, and another flipped upside-down. He quickly runs to the car to see if anyone is trapped inside, without a thought. He sees an African-American women caught in her seatbelt and dives through the broken window and asks if she is alright. When she responds that she cannot breathe, he slides in further to try to help her unbuckle and get out; Around them, gasoline is dripping from the tank. The woman, Christine, recognizes him from earlier as the officer her sexually assaulted her in front of her husband, and screams at him to get away from her--having been scarred by their earlier encounter. On New Year’s Day 2009, the police were called because a fight broke out on a train in Oakland, California. Oscar Grant and some of his friends were pulled off the train by former cop Johannes Mehserle. Grant struggled some with the officers while being arrested, but then he was restrained. Oscar Grant was lying on the platform when Johannes Mehserle shot him around 2 am. Granted had both hands behind his back and he was also unarmed when he was shot (Bulwa). The shooting made national headlines because bystanders videotaped it. These videos went viral and they made their way to the news (Cater).
The main character in John Updike's short story “A&P” is Sammy. The story's first-person context gives the reader a unique insight toward the main character's own feelings and choices, as well as the reasons for the choices. The reader is allowed to closely observe Sammy's observations and first impressions of the three girls who come to the grocery store on a summer afternoon in the early 1960s. In order to understand this short story, one must first recognize the social climate of the era, the age of the main character, and the temptation this individual faces.
Sammy has not been making the correct decisions. He has made impactful decision that he will regret. That decision wasn’t even for a valid point. He foolishly acted as a hero to individuals who didn’t need saving. He acted out in his own interests which lead him to look silly at the end. He isn’t reliably. The report included testimony from Officer Darren Wilson, physical evidence, forensic evidence, and many witnesses. According to the Department of Justice report on the incident, Officer Darren Wilson was driving after finishing one of his calls and saw Michael Brown and his friend walking on the double yellow line in the middle of the street blocking traffic. According to his account, officer Wilson told them to move to the sidewalk in which they ignored. He then noticed they fit the descriptions he had earlier heard of the suspects of the robbery, he then parked his vehicle blocking traffic. He attempted to get out of his vehicle to speak to the boys but apparently Michael Brown blocked the car door and started to punch the officer. They engaged in a scuffle where Officer Wilson reached for his gun in which he claims that all he had access to. Michael Brown tried to take control of the gun, according to Wilson’s account. (Department of Justice, 2015) Officer Wilson then regained control of the gun and shot Michael Brown’s hand. Michael Brown then took off and Wilson chased him on foot. Brown started coming towards Wilson. Many witnesses even described Brown as “charging” towards Wilson. (McLaughlin, E. C. First responders play a crucial role in the establishment of a crime scene. Upon arriving at the scene, the first responders have checked for living victims and have rendered aid. It’s important to create a perimeter around the crime scene (this can be altered if additional evidence is found outside the initial crime scene). Only emergency personnel should enter and exit from the central entry point to control contamination, by creating an exit point; it helps avoid any excessive traffic through the crime scene. By secure the scene to ensure that no evidence is misplaced or damaged, or otherwise compromised. Do a cursory check of the crime scene to obtain any transient evidence and secure any weapons found at the scene (in this case it was already at the scene with the suspect). Crime scene analysts and investigators communicate with first responders and are quickly briefed on the situation, and now a more thorough search can be conducted.
