Legalize Same-Sex Marriage Same-sex marriage legalization is controversial. In 1924 the fight for same-sex marriage and equality began with The Society for Human Rights in Chicago. The society for Human Rights is the earliest documented organization. (Infoplease.com The American Gay Rights Movement: A Timeline). At the turn of the recent millennium this issue became more important in our society. It has been 90 years of fighting for same-sex marriage. This issue not only exists within the United States but throughout the world. In the United States votes are almost equally divided on same-sex marriage Many people are against same-sex marriage because of religious views, procreation, adoption, and the psychological effects on a child. I believe gay and lesbian couples should have the legal right to marry not only as approved state by state, but federally to acquire federal benefits like social security, health care benefits, in hiring and during employment. Many people are against same-sex marriage because they believe homosexuality is not sanctioned in the Bible. “If a man lies with mankind, as he lieth with a women, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them” (Leviticus 20:13). However the Bible also reads “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life (John 3:18). My interpretation of this is whoever believes in him, should not perish, but have everlasting life. God accepts all including gay and lesbian believers. Many religious followers hold marriage sacred. The acceptance of two people of the same gender uniting with marriage is an abomination. The Australian Study of Child Health in Same-Sex Families is one of the largest studies focused directly on that. 500 children in 315 families that participated in the study. The age of the children range from 2 months to 17 years old. The study lasted from May through December 2012. The children in the study displayed cohesiveness within the family and excelling in their adolescent lives. The lead researcher Dr. Simon Crouch, has stated “These children are growing up in a range of contexts and score well on measures of health and wellbeing in the face of discrimination.”(Crouch) This family bonding provides an easy communication and understanding when confronting issues that the children are faced with.
