What if you were denied the right to marry someone you love? Do the government and other people have the right to define what marriage is? For a while now there has been a great amount of discussions about same-sex marriage. The main questions on same-sex marriage are if it is right or not and if it should be legalized or not? There have already been some states that have legalized same-sex marriage. Many people have their own different views when it comes to same-sex marriage. My view on it is that, I believe gay marriage should be legalized. Homosexual couples should have the same rights to marry as heterosexual couples do.
In 1924, the Society for Human Rights in Chicago became the U.S.’s earliest known gay rights organization. About four decades letter Illinois became the first state to make homosexual acts illegal. Homosexuality used to be known as a sociopathic personality disorder in 1951. In 1973, the American Psychiatric Associations removes homosexuality from its official list of mental disorders. Throughout the many years gays and lesbian has been fighting to have the same rights as heterosexuals, mostly having the right to marry. In 2004, Massachusetts became the first state to legalize same-sex marriages. Throughout the years sixteen other states have legalized same-sex marriages.
In the early times, same-sex marriage was allowed in many cultures. Couples of the same-sex were acknowledge by the kingdom of Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt. In the earlier times of Greeks, attractions between same-sex people were considered normal. Same-sex marriages were believed to be more pure than heterosexual marriages. The debate over same-sex marriage will always be an issue until it becomes legalized. Although same-sex marriage only became a legal issue not long ago, it has been around since ancient times. Not allowing same-sex marriage is against the U.S. Constitution and is discrimination. Religion should not be involved in politics in any way, since religious view is the main reason why same-sex couples aren’t allowed to get married. By allowing same-sex marriage it will not only benefit same-sex couples but also America. There are still many benefits that same-sex couples have yet to receive just like heterosexual couples, but throughout the years same-sex couples have received many other benefits. Legalizing same-sex marriages will create equality for everyone.
