In the United States of America there has been great debate over gay rights especially on the matter of same sex marriage. Another major issue that came about in this realm is the decision of gay and lesbian couples to raise families. There has been a great deal of controversy and history dealing with same sex couples and their rights. Firstly, to determine the exact number of same-sex couples in the US may be pretty difficult but there are estimates that stem from the 2000 census data, even though it fails to cover a large percent of same-sex couples (Linville et al, 2011). The estimated number of same sex couples in the U.S as of 2005 is 770,000 and the estimated amount of same-sex couples with children is about 39% of same sex couples between the ages of 22 and 55 were raising 250,000 children under 18 years old at the time data was collected (Ponce et al, 2010).

The debate with this is same sex marriage is unnatural, from a religious point of view “against the bible”, and social conservatives argue that the purpose of marriage is to provide great support for childbearing and gay and lesbian couples cannot biologically produce children with each other (McCall, 2010).

In current research on this topic, there’s been notice that same sex adoption has actually been on the rise even though many states have policies that restrict same sex foster parenting or adoption. In the state of Florida legislators have banned the ability of gays and lesbians to adopt and foster. There have been many children speaking out recently on how they grew with their LGBT parents and how their development hasn’t been harmed as well as how the adoption may have been beneficial. One of the biggest challenges same sexed families do face though are the culture that we live in it supports heterosexuality but have very homophobic beliefs which definitely affects these families in different ways.
