Salvador Dali is a Spanish artist known for being a key figure in Surrealism, which began as a cultural movement before transitioning to an artistic movement. Through the influences of history, science, and other artists, Dali created many unique paintings such as: Soft Construction with Boiled Beans, The Persistence of Memory, and Portrait de Paul Eluard. Salvador Dali was born near Barcelona, Spain on May 11, 1904. In his early childhood, he was known to have “fits of anger against his parents and classmates and received cruel treatment from them in response” (Biography 1). There appears to be a storm coming into the painting on the left side due to the darkening of colors and added yellow tint. The painting is a skewed reality, but in the foreground there appears to be a head of a man on top of what looks like to be the bone of a leg morphed into a knife. Dali uses texture in the head of the man with the lack of detail and sharpness to make hair. There is also a smooth texture created on the bones from blending the oil paints gently. But for the neck and hands, he has sharp lines to show strains in the muscles. There are also other body parts and bones of a man conjoining into each other to create a geometric figure. The geometric figure formed from the body parts creates implied line from the sharp straight lines of the bones. The implied line puts an emphasis on the bone that is shaped like a knife. The color of the bones also matches the yellow tint of the clouds adding to the decaying and eerie mood of the artwork. On some of the bones there are also boiled beans, and the geometric figure appears to be resting on a box or shed. The major structures in the painting consist of an umber colored cross and three ladders. Starting from the top of the image, there is an old man with a scraggly, white beard holding onto and leaning over the top beam of the cross. He is set off by color, wearing a bright red gown and azure head wrap. The majority of his body rests atop the cross while he stands on the ladder that is leaning on the back of the cross.
There is a lot of repetition of the vertical lines of the forest in the background of the painting, these vertical lines draw the eye up into the clouds and the sky. These repeated vertical lines contrast harshly with a horizontal line that divides the canvas almost exactly in half. If one came close to the figure’s stomach where there’s the seafoam green, one can see the strong mark makings of the paint brushes and knife strokes, making the paint come out of the canvas. Similarly, Brown also uses big paint strokes of different colors to direct viewer’s eyes around the artwork. For instance, on the left side of the figure, there is a big vertical downward motion of a brush stroke in maroon, that connects to a green streak that goes up and encompasses the figure’s head and then downward to the body of the figure, which outlines and pushes the figure to stand out. And to make our eyes go back to the figure, Brown paints a blue triangle on the chest, making it a focal point due to it’s dark color that stands out of the light colors. The composition of the painting takes place with the square of the canvas. The square is approximately 5' x 5'. A black frame surrounding the painting protrudes approximately 4" off the canvas. There is a 1" inlay between the canvas and frame. From this square, Reinhardt breaks the composition into six equal squares in three even rows. Texture is no where to be found in the painting. No visual indication of the artist's brush stroke is present. No varnished glare is given off by the piece. The entire work, including the frame, is completely matte. The squares take up the entire canvas in a checkerboard type arrangement. Each square is a slightly different shade of blue-black. It almost becomes impossible to see the difference between each square. The middle squares in the top and bottom rows shift more towards blue than the rest of the squares. The division of these middle squares become more obvious than the others. When the painting is looked at from a distance, it is almost impossible to see any of the squares at all. When looking from a far, all a viewer can see is a blackish blue canvas. As you stare longer into the painting, a halo begins to form around the corners of the canvas, creating a circle inside the square. Once you look away from the canvas, the circle is gone. With this observation in mind, we could say that the painting most definitely relies on the viewer. A viewer is required to look at the piece for its full affect. We could say that the squares in the painting are self-contained.
This painting consists of regular lines as well as implied lines. Some of the regular lines that have been included are flowing, curved lines, such as the Earth that the woman is sitting on top of. Additionally, the background is made of small scenes that have been outlined by a dotted line, which places emphasis on the scenes. Besides regular and visible lines, there are a few implied lines in this painting. For instance, the woman's eyes are looking forward, so there is an implied line to the audience. Additionally, another implied line would be the woman's right arm, which is pointed towards her headpiece, while her left arm is pointed towards the earth. Nonetheless, this painting is not intense; although it does have splashes of color, this painting does not have a bright saturation. Instead, this painting is slightly dull, which makes this painting appear vintage. Additionally, since this background is a dark color, it makes the rest of painting, especially the headpiece, stand out. Besides colors and lines, even though this is a painting and there is no physical texture, there is invented texture. Upon viewing this painting, underneath the earth where the woman is sitting on, there are roots as well as grass, which give texture and feeling to the painting. The Salvador Dali artistic movement is called surrealism in this style there are very strange and imaginative images. He tries to express the unconscious like in a dream. In The Persistence of Memory painting, there are four droopy watches in an eerie landscape. “If Persistence of Memory depicts a dream state, the melting and distorted clocks symbolize the erratic passage of time that we experience while dreaming.”(Legomenon) This is one example of many of the meanings of this precious painting. This painting was made in 1921 and it was made by using oil on canvas.
Salvador Domingo Felipe Jacinto Dali i Domenech, Marquis of Dali de Puebol was born on May 11, 1904 in Spain. His father, Salvador Dali y Cusi, was a middle class lawyer and a notary. His father was very strict with raising his children. On the other hand his mother, Felipa Domenech Ferres allowed Salvador more freedom to express himself however he wanted, we can see this in his art and how eccentric he was throughout his life. Salvador was a bright and intelligent child, and often known to have a temper tantrum, his father punished him with beatings along with some of the school bullies. Salvadors father would not tolerate his son’s outburst or wild ways, and he was punished often. Father and son did not have a good relationship and it seemed there was competition between the two for his mother, Felipa attention. Dali had an older brother who was five years old, who died exactly nine months before he was born. His name was Salvador Dali. There were many different stories about how he was named. It is traditional in the Spanish culture that the oldest male takes the father’s name, this is the simple story. The other story was that his father gave him the same name expecting him to be like his dead five year old big brother. Dali later in life told others that his parents took him to his brothers grave and told him that he was a reincarnation of his older deceased brother. Dali said “we resemble each other like two drops of water, but we had different reflections. He was probably a first version of myself, but conceived too much in the absolute”. Being a child and trying to comprehend that your parents are comparing you to a sibling that has past is difficult but the fact that Salvador had to visit the grave in incomprehensible.

While looking at the Dali’s piece of art which is a pictorial reproduction in my guest room, the viewer can easily mention the influence of the surrealism movement. The picture looks like it has been taken out of one’s dream. The horizon line crosses the picture at the two-third level, hence attracting the one’s view to the foreground rather than the background. The figure of the melting watches represents the phenomenon of a dream that captivated the minds of surrealists. According to the fact of visual distortions, the shapes of the objects are changed consequently. Nonetheless, being motionless in its own artistic nature, the picture is opposite to the nature of time that always runs. This sculpture seems to epitomize the ideal male human form. All of the body parts seem perfectly proportioned and the muscles are beautifully defined as if the image were of an athlete. The image is youthful with a calm demeanor. The right missing forearm looks as if it used to be resting at his side, while the left elbow was probably at a 90 degree angle, with the hand holding something. The slight bend in the left leg gives the impression of movement, as if the image was frozen while walking. The counterpoised stance adds an air of nobility to the "man".
