Sally is amongst the most wonderful mothers I have ever known. She begins each morning – rain-or-shine, lively-or-sick – at three o’clock sharp, when the late night grasshopper chirps are mixed with those of the early birds’. Now, she doesn’t arrive at work until nine and only spend thirty minutes getting herself freshened-up, dressed, and fed. So where does all of her remaining time go? The short answer is: Sally is devoted to singlehandedly preparing her daughter for each day ahead. No lack of congratulations is welcomed for her nor the thousands of mothers who struggle with the same tasks of caring for their infants. This warning comes directly from one of the top scientific health organizations, yet has proven insufficient. As the government cannot decide how to financially respond to such a threat, a pregnant mother is held hostage indoors, where she cannot help her distress. What if, one of the times, outdoors, she is bitten by an infected mosquito; what would her future encompass then? The ambiguity she must endure is certainly unfair. Living in the world that consists of three thousand different types of mosquitoes is frightening. People got used to a daily routine of waking up and getting to their jobs, that many of them are so focused on their career and family that they do not even notice and pay much attention when they are getting bitten by mosquitoes. Unfortunately not many people were aware of the fact that not all insects are safe, many of mosquitoes transfer infections, but we were not concentrating on that since it was considered not a common issue. As a repercussion, people did not begin to react and notice that something wrong with them when Aedes mosquitoes began their attempt on ruining people’s social, physical and psychological lives by transferring a Zika virus to the once who are bitten.
The article ‘Zika Virus and Microcephaly’ has broadly discussed the Zika virus. Zika virus has spread uncontrollably through South and Central America. There has been many cases reported of infants getting affected by the by the disease while they are in their mother’s womb; and also their has been increase in reports of infants born with microcephaly. A few days ago, the first case of the Zika virus discovered in Dallas, Texas. The Zika virus is spread by mosquitos and can be contracted through sexual contact with an infected individual. Prior to this incident, experts were not able to tell whether the virus could be contracted through sex. Some major symptoms of the virus include joint aches, skin rash, fever and reddened eyes. According to William E. Scheweizer, only “1 out of 5 people” will display these virus symptoms. Many birth defects are also linked to the Zika virus, including a condition where infants are born with extremely small heads. One of the health incidents that has occurred recently, given the summer months season, is the concern with the Zika virus. Although the Zika virus has minimal effect on the average person, the greater concern is with pregnant women and the affects to the unborn child. Devastating enough, the inability to prevent other issues, such as due pregnancy. According to CDC, “Zika infection during pregnancy can cause a serious birth defect of the brain called microcephaly, and is linked to other problems in fetuses and infants infected with Zika before birth”.
Each day increases the number of American families that face the tasks of balancing demanding work schedules and family obligations. Unfortunately, in case after case one finds the woman carries the major portion of these obligations. Recently I spoke with the mother of two young daughters. She went on to describe how she handled the task this responsibility saying:
Valerie was fortunate enough to be able to take off from work for thirteen years to raise all four of her children; however, when her youngest turned two years old and her and her husband went through a divorce things changed. Valerie had to go back to work sooner than she had wanted to support her family. Valerie start part time until the youngest child was old enough to begin school. From that point on, Valerie was fortunate enough to alway work in the same school district as her children, but still she faced difficulties. Whenever a child was sick, it was her responsibility to drop everything to tend to their needs. Valerie noted that while she always planned to return to work, she felt “guilty that [she] could not give the younger two children as much attention as [she] gave the older two children” (Archetto). One major impact, balancing work and family life has on women is the internal guilt that mother’s feel for leaving their children. Society makes it clear that when a child needs something it is the mother’s job to drop everything, but if she is working and not able to do as much women feel a tremendous guilt. In Valerie’s case, she had to call for extra help when her schedule and her children’s schedules differed. She hired a woman to come to the house in the morning and afternoon to get the children ready for school and to pick them up until Valerie
